i'd prefer a shutdown D but that isn't realistic at this point. the d did the job - kept the game close until the o got in gear with "don't break", and help win the TO battle .

    Loser: tangofoxwhiskey

My Mom was in a head on collision before the game. A guy in a Ford Ranger lost control on a corner and came sideways into her. When I got home, the power was out, which killed my DVR recording of the game.

    Winner: tangofoxwhiskey

My Mom is fine. Ever see the "they survived" Subaru commercial? The engine compartment is toast, but save deployed airbags, the passenger compartment is pristine.

The power came on in time for me to see DWill get a pair of TDs to ice the game. I'll catch the whole game later. Great win, Steelers!

I'm guessing the ref who liked having his butt slapped was NOT the ref who threw the flag for AB's...um..."celebration". LOL!

I never got to see actual footage of his block in the back but I was curious if it was one of those plays where he was just hitting somebody to hit them.

I agree that the pass rush wasn't as good as it could be.

Remember, though, that Butler was deliberately not coming in with a huge number of blitzes. It was, in fact, a classic Lebeau-strategy of forcing the short throws. Against the Bengals, I expect to see more blitzing.

The two issues that came from Butler's strategy were:

    - We were missing too many first tackles - so while we kept the catch in front of us, they were then getting YAC which allowed them to convert a few times.

    - Cousins seemed to get rattled very quickly. I don't know if they were disguising pressure, or he was just misreading/getting too excited, but he was definitely getting rid of the ball too early. Better/more battle-hardened QBs won't do that.

    Anyways, my picks:
Winners - credit to the coaches for drawing up a sensible gameplan on both sides of the ball. There were no real boneheaded calls, and they used substitutions well (particularly putting Fort in when then did).
Losers - nobody stuck out as being really awful; the rookies made some rookie mistakes. I would have liked to have seen more from McCullers and JJ.

Winners: The Offense. D Will, Ben, AB, DeCastro, Jesse James. Young receivers came to play and Coates held on to a few.

Losers: Defense.Jarvis Jones is Horrible! Glad they didn't give him the 5th year option. The lack of pass rush = 0 sacks. The dink and dunk is the game that will be played against this zone coverage until they get a stronger pass rush. Zero sacks! Not good.

Nice win but this Defense has to get better going forward to get the 7th...

jesse james , eli did their jobs pretty well as newbies. as i said in other threads even depleted we still have a lot of firepower. D played well i thought. they are still fairly new together as a unit still and it should get better. cockrell full time, davis, golden, hargraves, chick, fort (i figured he'd be shaziers replacement if needed), matthews are all relatively new additions full time and part time to this D and it will need some time together. pretty good showing for week 1 though.

Did Matakevich see the field, or did he not get a hat?

that's a very simplistic take. Fans hate zone coverages because on TV it just looks like we are leaving guys wide open. The reality is that QBs have a lot more to process when reading zones. Cover 6 is much harder to diagnos pre-snap than cover 2 man. Counsins, known for his accuracy, was shorting balls and missing guys all night. You either think that suddenly Cousins became inaccurate, or you accept that our zones CAUSE that. The more a QB has to process, the harder his job is.

Yes, a better QB is going to do a better job than Cousins. More experience, etc. BUT... our defense is designed to make you execute snap after snap, and slowly move the ball. Is Tom Brady going to chew that approach up? Yea... and we likely will blitz and attack a team like New England, far more than a team like Washington.

The defense was good against Washington. They executed very well. The first quarter was dicey with some ugly missed tackles... but after that they settled in and executed the game plan, which was to make Washington work 5 yards at a time, and hold for FGs. Yea, we'd all like to see more edge pressure... but we all know that's a weakness this year. No team is flawless.

Here's the mantra for this year's Steelers defense... We won't lose to Yards Against or Field Goals against. Any defense that holds the opponent to 16 points is doing it's job. Hard to call them losers.

Jesse and Eli both had very critical errors. Eli on the INT, Jesse on the sack fumble.

Steelers will be #2 in all the power rankings that come out tomorrow, even though they dominated without Bell, Wheaton, Dupree and Green. We all know who will be #1. *farts*

what is your thinking about timmons RPO? just curious. he missed some tackles but then made the next play it seemed to me. shazier missed a few tackles too and then made some plays. we need these two to get consistent in their tackling that's for sure. i thought davis did OK for his first time out, hopefully it improves.

He looks to have lost another step... his sideline to sideline is gone. And he's failing to breakdown and make strong open field tackles like he used to.

    • There was the ugly missed tackle on the 1st drive to Reed.
    • The Desean crosser on the 2nd drive (good playcall for Washington, but if you are going to play cover 6 with Timmons in the middle, teams are going to run those crossers right at him)
    • The very next play (Jones run), Timmons was so gased from the previous crosser that he meakly engaged his block with little effort to disengage.
    • He was beat badly for what should've been a TD on the play that went to Reed in endzone (shazier with beauty coverage).
    • It was funny to watch the return after the Shazier pick. Timmons and Shazier are side by side for a moment, and you can see the vast difference in athleticism.
    • The whiff on Vernon Davis when he took it down to the 2 yard line... ugly.
I'm probably forgetting plenty of good solid plays he made, but some of the above really stood out.

10 good years, but he's close to done. He's already coming off the field on 3rd down passing situations. I wouldn't be surprised to see him come off the field more when we are playing with the lead in the 4th quarter.

Agreed. I was happy with their overall performances, but they were both responsible for a few of the only mistakes the offense made all night.
