Crazy, I didn't even remember Mark Malone playing in an AFC Championship game.

Mark Malone and Dan Marino will lose their record for being the youngest QBs to play in a championship game when Purdy and Hurts take the field this weekend.

Being the NFC, it will be interesting to see how this discussion devolves into a bash Tomlin thread, but I’m here for the party.

Thanks to Mike Steelers lost their lead in Championship game appearances (Shannahan took the 49ers to enough recently to eclipse the Steelers)

Lost the youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl by not winning it last year.

There’s other records as well - overall playoff wins, tied in Super Bowl wins, etc.

But, good luck to the young guys.

The Dolphins won the 1984 AFC Championship game over the Steelers 45-28. The Steelers hung with them for a while but Marino was too much for them that day.
The game before that Malone outplayed Elway to eliminate the Broncos. Elway threw 2 picks and was sacked 4 times as the Steelers won 24-17. Frank Pollard ran for 99 yards and 2 TD's and Walter Abercrombie ran for 75 more. The Steelers were only 9-7 that year but Noll took them to the title game with a ground and pound offense and a solid defense.

Good recall. I don't remember most of that outside of the championship game.

I remember Gary Dunn intercepting a pass in that game against the Broncos, then Eric Williams got one to help clinch the game late. That team relied heavily on rookies even though their No. 2 pick, Chris Kolodziejski, blew out his knee and never recovered. (Yes, I had to look up the spelling of his name. I can still pronounce it, but could never keep the spelling straight.) That was also the year John Stallworth rebounded after injuries had ruined a couple of his seasons. They also beat the 49ers in San Francisco, the only game the 49ers lost that season.

They just couldn't stop Marino in that AFC Championship game. That defense was solid overall but weak at the corners, which was a killer against Duper and Clayton.

I think Mark Malone held the longest reception for a TD record for the Steelers for a while.

He did. He caught a 90-yard touchdown pass from Bradshaw in 1981. It was also his only regular-season reception in the NFL.

Too bad he was such a lousy quarterback. He managed to suck even with one of the better pairs of wide receivers in the league in '84 and '85.

Mark Malone. He does have a spot in the list of Steeler lore.
Not going to say good or bad lure, but he was bad at QB.
Kind of reminded me of Hanratty, with Hanatty being better.

Hanratty was the second best all time, with Rudolph this year being better

Mark Malone was a pretty boy. I think he looked like "Magnum TI" for all of the oldies on this board.
