I do think they need to catch up to the times with respect to more specialized assistants. Rooney was asked in the offseason about bringing in more, and he thought they had enough people on the current staff to get the job done. Whether he was being cheap or doesn't just see the value in some in those positions I can't say, but in light of many in the league now employing them, it's setting the organization back.

That said, I don't think money is the primary driver behind some of Tomlin's sub-standard hires. They've occasionally brought in an established name (Haley, Smith, Flores) that would likely command more than a younger, less-proven option. And while there were some misses, Cowher generally did a good job of acquiring quality assistants.

Not all filling those roles are going to be expensive hires - a lot of guys that get the job are still making their bones. A savvy coach has to be able to parse the field and either identify younger, high-potential options, or else hit management up to drop some coin for another.

I'm sure there was no advance plan to have a senior assistant for the defense until Flores was let go from Miami an subsequently filed a lawsuit against the NFL.

Harbaugh has blown 17 games when they have been up by 10 points or more, many of them in the fourth quarter. His in game decision making was terrible. Jackson was good right from the start he didn't become good, if anything he has gotten worse as his career as gone along.
McDermott is also poor at in game decisions but not as bad as Harbaugh was. Josh Allen is so talented and such a physical beast that you or I could have coached him to be the league's MVP.

Eh, that’s what fans do, make predictions, some even put money on the SB at the beginning of the season.

    Ok.
So Lamar Jackson should win a SB next year then, and Josh Allen as soon as they fire their HC.
Funny everyone said the same about Mike Mccarthy, and A. Rodgers, so they fired Mccarthy, got LaFleur still no SB win, and so then they got rid of Rodgers, and LaFleur has one double digit winning season since.

I guess Lamar Jackson will win the SB next year. It was all Harbaugh fault.
Lamar Jackson's 13 total tds ,compared to his 14 total turnovers has nothing to do with not making the SB. LoL.
So all they need is a new HC, and SB bound.
As a Steeler fan, I'm glad they fired him.

Jackson was certainly the catalyst for kicking Harbaugh to the curb. Now that he has his wish he has to perform next year that's for sure.

You are misremembering. LJ was not a good QB starting out. He wasn't a very accurate passer. Josh Allen was the same. Terribly inaccurate but turned it around in a couple seasons.

I was going to write all this, but I didn't want @Hanratty#5@Hanratty#5 to think I was picking on him, I like the ole boy.

Jackson won the league MVP in his first full year as a starter he was better then than he is now. He might be a slightly better passer now but he isn't nearly the electrifying athlete that he was then.

I think LJ is very similar to Randall Cunningham. If the rules were in such favor of the offense back then as they are now, think what Cunningham could've done.

They are both better than Vick and RG3 ever were. But it's that same neck down philosophy of playing QB that really shortens careers. LJ wanted to be a pocket guy but just didn't have the arm talent or the ability to read a defense early on. Now that he's developing that part of the game, he's stacking injuries. "Injuries".

That is true about them better at passing now but I think that is from being acclimated to the NFL as they got experience through the years rather than good coaching. Going back to Harbaugh even his last decision as the Ravens coach was a disaster. They had the ball at the 23 with 15 seconds and a timeout left but instead of running Henry up the middle for a few yards he had Jackson run backwards 3 yards and kneel down. I said to my son-in-law right when it happened that it was big mistake. In 20° weather and especially on that field there's a big difference between a 44 yard FG and a 38 yard try.

How many OC/QB coaches has LJ had in Baltimore? How many for Josh Allen?

I don't know, just curious suddenly.

What if for just say he had run Henny , and he fumbles???
Would not everyone be saying how stupid he just didn't kick the field goal. I think a lot is hindsight.

It wasn't hindsight for me. My first thought was boy did they screw up by running back a few yards and kneeling down. Yeah if Henry fumbled Harbaugh would have been fired, lol.

Supposedly the Jets called him and he told them not to waste his time.

I understand that, but they've already lost one game this year because "just hand off to Henry" ended up with a fumble and a blown 15 point lead.

Then just have Jackson sneak it for a yard or two or even run a bootleg which could have been a big run. But no Harbaugh called the one thing that you can't do is deliberately go backwards and make the kick harder. Harbaugh handed us a game or two every year because of his ineptness.

So my friend. If I bring this up next year, and they don't win a Sb, what will be the excuse??
Because believe you me, they aren't going to be happy with a HC that just gets them to the playoffs , what would be the point. You already have that. Once Your fire a HC that has been to a SB, and won one, and that has you in the playoffs 12 of 18 years, You then can't be just happy with making the playoffs.
I really see this turning out badly for them, and I like it.
I already seen the fans , and media blame it on the old OC Greg Roman for running it too much. Then after they got a new OC, the same fans, and media said they don't run it enough. LoL

I'm pretty sure the Ravens will have a winning record next year which they didn't have under Harbaugh this past season. Lamar was just going through the motions and tapping out in a lot of games he could have played in because he was disenchanted with Harbaugh and wanted him gone. Now that doesn't say a lot about Jackson's character but that's what it is. Jackson got his wish and now he has to perform next year.

Or maybe, just maybe everyone in sports "journalism" should think before they repeat as fact what Harbaugh's agent told them. But I guess the guy has no incentive to lie and exaggerate interest in his client, right?

In the end, I'm sure it's a mix of both. The 90's and early 00's were a different time in the NFL when it came to hiring staff and drafting. It's apples and oranges.

As far as Tomlin goes, if Tomlin's ego truly was the blocker for brining in experienced coaches, Flores and Haley never would have been hired. Haley was let go due to a rift with Ben and Ben had a closer relationship to the Rooney's than Tomlin did at the time.

As far as the Rooney's go, they are still stuck in the 90's and early 00's...at least they were when Colbert was GM. Kahn is starting to change that a bit I feel.

ESPN Sources: Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross met with McDaniel this week to discuss the season. After that meeting and reflection, Ross decided to move on.
