This year no or so Tomlin says. Last year it was widely reported that Tomlin took over the play calling. If it's 100% fact I'm not sure...

So if they fire Butler who is going to take over in season? Olsavsky? Porter? I don't care for him as DC either but it won't happen until the offseason imo. We just better hope to you know who that MT doesn't give the reins over to Porter.

This is interesting, if true. The defense seemed to be clicking until Shazier went down.

Until this defense can put pressure on the qb this team is doomed.

I covered this elsewhere in a thread. Not a big deal just stats looked up via google search. Last year the Steelers defense statwise was not all that bad. I'm sure partly this was due to Shazier being in play. He played over half the season.

I think the greater issue is the secondary, and Bostic should not be out there on 3rd and passing situations. Hell put Matt Thomas in. Can't do any worse.

I know, still you didn't see Tomlin with a playsheet last season either . The last HC in the NFL to call his own defense was Rex Ryan.

Don't matter much to me if he has a play sheet or not when Tomlin admits he was calling the plays last year that's all I need. To me this is about not putting all the blame on Butler when the HC steps in to take over.

Butler may be the one to blame for now but Tomlin is ultimately to blame because it's happening on his watch...it's his job to fix things.

IMO there is enough blame for both, I just don't think you can give it all to Butler.

There is definitely enough blame to go around. Honestly I put this on Tomlin because if Butler isn't qualified to run this defense to at least a respectable level,he shouldn't be here. Like I said its Tomlins job to fix it one way or the other....

Why is most everyone so sure that Tomlin can can him? Maybe the Rooney's have a say in it.

Except he never admitted that , just because Bouchette said it then fans believed it without any proof.

Tomlin might not have been calling specific plays, but more generally instructing Butler to play man, zone, blitz, ...

Somebody probably told Bouchette that Tomlin got more involved with the defense during practice, then Bouchette wrote about it making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Big picture it doesn't matter who is calling the plays it's the HCs job to fix any problems therefore Tomlin is to blame either directly or indirectly

You'd think Butler would do the "honorable" thing and just step down, but he'll milk the clock until the front office cuts him loose.
Too many teams already were beginning to figure out Lebeau's defense years before he was released (hence - why he was released). THEN Colbert puts the guy Lebeau taught everything he knows, Butler, in as DC... brilliant move !!!

that wont be enough unless they can cover for a good amount of time. Any top notch QB will 3 step drop and dump all day to avoid the pass rush. thats been the bane of our defense for years.
