they can offer him a 4 yr contract now - instead of the 5th yr option

    doubt they do that.

they may do neither - roll the DICE - let him play this year out - as see where ALL THE CHIPS fall with both he and Wilson after the 2024 season.

    Exactly

If he cant do it when it’s not full speed and you aren’t going to get hit you sure will not do well in game conditions

The Steelers can trash his whole contract a do a new one.
We don't want that $25 Mil cap hit.
I am unaware of any stipulations preventing us from doing so.

It is if exercise the fifth-year option. They can renegotiate, extend, or offer him a new deal later, but he doesn't have to accept any of that.

Justin Fields is coming with a chip on his shoulder against Pittsburgh-“Y’all sent me Chase Claypool!”

If Fields is a hit, he's a genius.
If Fields never sees the Field... that means Wilson is doing well and he looks like a genius still.
If Wilson fails/ IR and Fields fails.. It may be time to look for a new GM. Though Pittsburgh is reluctant to do so. You live or die by this sort of things in most places.

Well.....we had Rudolph, who became something late that NONE of us saw. Saved Tomlins neck and our season. We were a bad 7-4 team, with an inept offense, that quickly dropped to 7-7, then lightening struck!

this D can be scary good, with a few more supporting actors.

they will get that, a few more FA's to fill in the cracks and some draft picks.

you mean - he can 'sit out' that fifth year. Yes, he can, but $25M would be a nice payday for the kid!

I like our team, have for the past 2 years with proper drafting and additional
Fa signings and quality play calling and barring key injuries we should only improve.
Expectations are thru the roof, they better deliver.

It sounds like the Bears did Fields a solid and sent him to a team that he wanted to go to.

If they exercise the 5th year option not only is the 25 in 25 full guaranteed but so is his 24 salary

They would probably offer him a shorter term contract, maybe 1-2 years gives Fields a chance to hit free agency earlier.

OK. Don't like the Mason Rudolph example of someone that improved his reputation and ability while sitting on the bench, we will change gears and go to Mitch Trubisky.

Mith Trubisky signed a 1 year $2 million deal with Buffalo in 2022 to be the backup QB after a disaster in Chicago. After sitting on the bench for a year, and getting praised by his teammates and coaches for how he had changed his game, he received a 2 year $27 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I don't see why Justin Fields could not pull a Mitch while sitting behind Russell Wilson this year.

I don't mean sit out. I doubt he is going to be in a position to argue for more. My point was that they would be stuck paying him at least that much.
