I know we have talked to death the BA forced retirement, Todd Haley v. Ben causing the promotion of Fichtner to be Ben's enabler plot line but some of the headlines the beat writers have been using as camp gets nearer have me wondering. Is Matt Canada more than just the QB coach? I know Tomlin said he had a wealth of experience and talent and it would be stupid not to draw on it but some are making it seem like RF is now an empty shirt as Canada begins to mold the offense to his vision. Is anyone else picking up on these cues?

I was kind of wondering about this as well. Tomlin said, You’ll see Canada’s fingerprints all over the offense.... Or something like that. Is Randy just a placeholder for now? Either way I hope we see a dynamic offense that’s hard to predict.

If so, I wonder how much the shortened offseason has affected implementation of Canada’s vision. Honestly, I think the Fichtner/Ben pairing is OK. In 2018 when our offense struggled, I think it was more due to mistakes on the field than game plan and play calling. Fichtner without Ben was an entirely different story.

I think Ben is the OC really. And by that I mean he tells them what he wants to do and they come up with a game plan and then tweak it until he’s comfortable with it.

But yes, I think Canada will be in a similar situation as Terry’s Austin was last year. No proof but I think he played a signifiant roll in game planning the defense. I just find it hard to believe that Butler was given MORE responsibilities and the LB’s and defense were great. I think more likely he filled more of the roll as LB’s coach while Austin performed a lot of DC responsibilities.

For some reason the Steelers always try to be cute with the coaching positions, BA and DL retiring when in fact they didn’t and were let go. I can see them avoiding making it public that Butler was demoted. Just a hunch.

there's a CFL joke in there somewhere, I'm just trying to mesh it out. Either way, two heads are better than one, RF was spread pretty thin last year. But I really don't think either Austin or Canada is going to take over the coordinator positions any time soon. Austin may leap frog and become Assistant HC but I think the loyalty by Tomlin is strong in regards to KB and RF.

Under Tomlin they started trying to be cute. Under Cowher they had no problem saying coaches were dismissed and such.

The defensive coaches became better coaches when the team acquired Minkah Fitzpatrick.

I think the Rooney's seen all they had to see last year with how our offense
performed without Ben. Unacceptable. Canada is in place for a reason.

I see it as the best of both worlds. People get down on fichtner from last year but the year before Ben threw for 5,000 yards. RF had a very successful offense at Memphis and it put them on the national stage during his time there without a lot of blue chip recruits. It's very difficult to change a successful old qb and why would you? RF was his qb coach, wr coach and OC, so he has a long history working with Ben in this offense. Even when BA and Haley were here RF was involved with this offense. It's not like he was just brought in off the streets.

Fast forward to the copy cat league. Run pass options is not a new concept to this offense but Canada is far more familiar with it's intricacies and has the time to teach them to our old dog. Not just one old dog but the old line as well. Fine tuning if you will the old and new together with RFs successful offense. Remember MT is all about the more you can do.

Meanwhile we have a coach that has the time to also transition a room full of young qbs. What they were taught in college and what Ben was taught in college and in the pro's is light years apart. 10 years different. Just how they play and interact is not an easy transition. You don't come in and change the old guy and his success, or you don't bring in the new and run what they have become used to and teach them and old way, you meld the two together as one. You don't run two different offenses. One for the old guy and one for the new. You make it team wide friendly. The best of both worlds.

Canada is not going to be throwing the ball. Give him a seasoned vet like Ben and he has a great tool to work with. Give him a Duck or a Deer not so much to work with.

I'm on the side of great players make great coaches. Look forward to see how great Belicheck is with Cam Newton under center.
