By the sounds of his situation, you're talking a 7th rounder or UDFA, either of which I can go along with. He'll be a 25 year old rookie.

I shy away from small school players unless they totally dominate
at that level. Then will have someone look at his tape.

The team will most likely give him a look due to the family fetish, but I agree that it will be either with a 7th rounder or a an UDFA...
    Worth a look

Ike Taylor played at Louisiana Lafayette and was one of best corners in Steelers history. But I understand your point. The Steelers used to make a habit of bringing in diamonds in the rough from small schools but now it seems like we gravitate toward the powerhouses. Lazy scouting? I don’t know but Yancey Thigpen, Greg Lloyd, James Harrison and other stars played at small schools. Shoot, the 70s teams were dominated by small school players but it was a different era for sure.

Ricardo Colclogh ring a bell? I wish we could find these small school players again.
It is hard to gauge, because of their week to week competition. IE liberty vs Oregon
We saw how that played out.

Most schools are fairly even going 1st string vs 1st string. Most schools. It’s the depth rotations where smaller schools get dominated by the larger schools.

Yeah, I thought about him. Played just down the road from me at Tusculum. I never said it always panned out, lol. But then again, big time athletes from big time schools don't always pan out either (remember Devin Bush, Artie Burns, Jarvis Jones, Huey Richardson, etc.)

Anyway, the college recruiting environment has definitely changed. Do you think a player of Terry Bradshaw's ability would have gone to Louisiana Tech or a stud like Joe Greene would have gone to North Texas State in today's environment? They'd be at LSU or Alabama or Texas or Ohio State. The Steelers made a living back in the day of drafting superstars from HBCUs with Bill Nunn leading the way. The 4 and 5 star recruits wouldn't even consider small colleges or HBCUs today.

You guys all know the Steelers do not have a 7th round pick this year.

I was going to suggest the Steelers go after Luke McCaffrey in the 5th round, and then I realized the Steelers do not have a 5th round pick either.

Pittsburgh Steelers Draft Picks By Round
    • Round 1, Pick 20
    • Round 2, Pick 51
    • Round 3, Pick 84
    • Round 3, Pick 98 (compensatory pick from PHI)
    • Round 4, Pick 117
    • Round 6, Pick 178 (from CAR through ARI)
    • Round 6, Pick 195

They can draft McCaffrey with one of their 6th round picks.

This is very true in the power conferences, but those below that it's not. That is not to say that those schools don't have talent....it's just not as many.

We should grab him with pick 195, if he is still there!
