Informative video. Steelers history at 7:56. I like that a number of teams had their name voted on by the fans.

I thought it was because every season we ripped the hearts out of Cincinnati and Cleveland fans? We basically stole any hope they would ever win our division. No?

Kind of obvious where it came from. I still like the logo with a Steeler on a steel beam from the 60's.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got their start as the Pittsburgh Pirates, named by the team's original owner, Arthur (Art) Joseph Rooney, Sr., on July 8, 1933. The name changed in 1940 in an attempt to generate local support and involvement. When fans submitted suggestions, several suggested the winning name Steelers to reflect the city's primary source of employment, earning season tickets for their efforts.

Honestly, no. Seems like the most obvious team name in the NFL, maybe aside from the Houston Texans.

I have the DVD set called The Complete History of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it has lots of great info like this. The actual logo was suggested by Cleveland Based company, Republic Steel.

Didn't Rooney want to name the team the Pirates and have shared name with the baseball team?
