Unless Mendenhall can't return to previous form, this is what happens.

The problem with that logic is that when the wing T was all the rage, BOTH teams ran the ball. It would actually even the stat out as there would be 1 winner and 1 loser who both ran the ball over 30 times.

thats 320 carries a year in just the regular season. you must not want him to play long. do you think we will run it 640 times in a season? why are we paying ben, wallace, sanders and brown?[/quote:138s3vfl]

I want him to play as long as he can at a high level...A RB such as him typically get better with more work..As to why are we paying Ben,Wallace,Sanders and Brown....We are not paying Wallace yet,Sanders is not making much money either....We pay those guys to play Football....As the QB we pay Ben to not throw a lot of picks,to not fumble the ball away, and to hit the open guy when the pass play is called..It doesn't matter if that's 200 attempts or 2000 its how he performs within those attempts thats what we pay him for...

As far as paying the WR'S go we pay them to play Football as well...Which means blocking well, selling good routes, running good patterns, catching the Football, protecting the Football....

The flip side of your Question is why do we pay our Defense so much?Well because we have a desire to play a certain style of D,and we have a desire to Impose our will on others...As Troy,Ward and many others have said our Offensive style has not meshed well with our Defensive style....As a result our overall Team performance is not at it's peak....To reach peak performane be efficient on Offense convert short yardage, and score the ball in the Redzone,Control the Clock, and protect the Football, and win the Field position game....Add a Great D to that and many a Champion has used that formula and many more will as well.....

does that change a fact that a team that runs the ball 30+ times a game wins over 90% of the time?

i'd think, the last few years and when the westcoast offense was hot it changed those stats a little. you have to have the qb,line and the defense nowdays to keep you in that type of game. i don't hate running the ball at all, but it should be used as a tool, and not base your offense on just that. what was nice back in the 70's and early 80's was that team had a stout defense and could play each game anyway they needed to. if they needed to throw alot they could, if they were running well, they would. that's balance and that's how YOU dictate the game. that's what i'd like to see here. balance and when we want to,an air attack. that will keep other teams guessing. i think rainey and gilbreath and brown could wear a defense out in about a half. then pound them with the run.

I was sold on Dwyer last year when he played when Mendy was hurt (vs. the Titans maybe??). Mendy's dancing around drives me crazy... :frustrated:

good news on red..full practice on Tuesday,,it seems he will be ready for Bills game with no set backs....If I have Haley pegged right, this should be the Inside running game with the PA passing game week....As a result I expect the TE'S to be used a lot this game,I also predict that we score the ball better in the Redzone...I think this type of PA game is our Bread and Butter and gives us the best chance to score the ball....

2 RB /2 TE sets and 1 RB/3 TE sets in the Redzone a test of our Power game and to see how well our TE'S can do in both phases of the game...

I really don't know how they can keep Dwyer off the field. He was one of the most talented RB's that came out of that draft class. His stock pummeled due to conditioning and the style of offense Georgia Tech plays. My only concern is his desire. I think both he and Redman will get about 10 carries per game with the "hot-hand" getting the bulk.
On a side-note, anybody see the lead block of Will Johnson's to start the game against Robert Mathis? Looked like he was picking up teeth... lol

Yeah, he was handling Mathis well. I liked what I saw.

I seen it; it was good.

I like Will Johnson. He has blocked well and caught the ball out of the backfield well. An upgrade.

Either Batch or Ford will be cut. One of the two makes the practice squad.

Not excited about our run game period.

I would fell better w/ Mendy back and these guys sharing the reps.

He's already proven himself to be our best lead blocker since Kreider (not a lot of competition, but still). He is a strong, athletic dude, and he is hungry to hit people too. His technique is already way better than we're used to and it stands to reason it will get better. I'm thrilled. I feel like I can finally relax a little...

i just wonder what we will do if ford stands out again? i think they would make a great one two punch in short yardage and later in games to finish teams off. i'm not real worried about the RB situation this year, even with 1 and 2 down. we still seem loaded. funny how an injury actually helps put the right guy in the lineup, in willj's case.

Me too. We've waited a long time.
I'm not either, Mac. Hopefully Red's hip will be OK, but if not, I'm still not too concerned honestly. We've got some really capable backs who should perform well. I like Ford, but I think he'll have to really stand out to make the 53 without an injury opening up a spot.

i just wonder if batch has done enough? i like batch alot and i know ford only had a few carries against some backups but this kid is a load. would we keep him over batch, just to teach him the blocking FB spot and have a backup to willj? if you build an offense around having a FB, what is the backup plan? this is something that worries me about rainey too.

Ford looked good to me too, but for whatever it's worth he lined up at FB against the Colts a whopping zero times (according to this: http://www.steelersdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/offense1.pdf). He only played RB. Seems like a great power back, though. And maybe he can lead block. Who knows? He's certainly got the size to do it.

Unfortunately it looks like he'll miss the Bills game, so that's one less game to see him in. Maybe we don't play him anymore, and then sneak him onto the practice squad.

Yeah, I was hoping he'd be lined up at FB Sunday, at least for a couple sets. Unfortunately as you said, it never came to be. He's got a hamstring 'injury of some description' though, so he'll be out this weekend. :|
