Not much change according to Khan. Still interesting to see such a frank answer to this. They are usually so cloak and dagger about it.

They also get input from the entire coaching staff

There's no rocket science to it.
The coaching notes what additions they need, like to have,
Salary Cap gurus and coaching meets to determine expected losses and gains,
balance out FA with the Draft
Grade/rank the players in the draft,
then hope the draft goes your way.

I think it's more challenging to the mock draftniks.

Ok, there is no change in the draft process. But, what about a list of possible udfa's prospects?

What would the owner possibly know about draft picks? He can't possibly have the in depth knowledge of all these guys coming out in the draft. I just don't get that at all.

Well we really don’t know the levels of Rooneys knowledge on these matters but from one video that was done on the Steelers draft process, a list of all players on the Steelers board would be presented to Rooney and he would remove anyone he felt was a character concern and than that would be the board they would use.

Do NFL teams have Scouts like MLB teams that travel to college games to scout players or is that something nobody does anymore?

    WIKI says Yes.
    https://www.wikihow.com/Become-an-NFL-Scout
National Football League (or NFL) scouts evaluate the talent of high school and college football players. They are responsible for identifying players that have the potential to succeed in the NFL. Working as an NFL scout allows you to work closely with the game of football and the players, but without having to play the game. But the odds are stacked against you - pro teams employ about 7-10 full-time scouts. That adds up to about 224-320 league-wide. You’ll need a demonstrated combination of management and organizational skills, a deep knowledge of the game, an instinct for identifying talent, passion and persistence, and networking acumen. There is no guaranteed path to becoming an NFL scout, but you can develop and demonstrate the skills that NFL organizations value.

Yes, there is a video that has been posted a number of times on it, it’s a collaborative effort.

But there are some here that don’t think Tomlin makes any picks and thats clearly not the case.

Actually Dan Rooney wanted Marino. He should have been more assertive and told them to do it.

    Dan Rooney:

"I made a mistake," Rooney wrote in his book, 'My 75 Years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL.' Instead of telling our [front office] I thought it up myself, I told them it was [the writer's] idea. And that was the end of it."

I can't believe they don't hit up SDOT for the strategic advice.

I believe that last year Art Rooney was 100% in charge of Drafting Kenny.

He might have made a deal with Tomlin that they would not trade up in the 1st round to get Kenny, but they would definitely draft Kenny if he was still available when the Steelers were on the clock.

The Steelers doing something stupid like moving up and getting Kenny was my biggest fear of last years draft. It was really the only reason I was against the Steelers taking a QB in the 1st last year.

Are you kidding me? It was Tomlin and Colbert 100%. They have been salivating over this kid for 5 years and attended many of his games.

Hopefully he lives up to their expectations.

My very vague memory of this from almost 40 years ago was that Dan Marino was known to be a big partier around Pitt campus and Chuck Noll was a no nonsense HC who was somewhat against drafting him.

I think that worked out well for Dan as his family life started with a wife he met in Miami and it really straightened him out. At the same time he could've probably brought some SB's to the Steelers with the defensive team that we had. Wish he was a Steeler back in the day but I bet he wouldn't trade it for anything.

The owners probably have knowledge of the players that go in the early rounds especially the QBs, Dan Rooney overruled Cowher and told them to draft Ben.

Then Mike Tomlin deserves an Oscar for creating all that Malik Willis Hype. He had me convinced last year that he wanted Willis, I assumed that Rooney overruled him when they drafted Kenny.
