Agree. Jarvis Jones came to mind as well as Artie Burns, Jamain Stephenson and Huey Richardson. But to trade up to get Bush and give away precious draft capital in the process has to be the biggest mistake. To be fair, A LOT of draft analysts were touting Bush as a plug and play linebacker coming out of college so it wasn’t just Colbert, Tomlin and company who missed on him. They were just the unfortunate ones who fell victim to the illusion.

Awesome! I didn’t realize Thomas was the first black graduate of Florida State. I remember Thomas as a solid, if not spectacular, piece of those 70s teams. He was a great complement to Mel Blount and part of the reason Blount had the success he had is because the guy on the other side was no pushover and not somebody the quarterback could pick on all game and not throw to Blount’s side of the field. It was also interesting to read about how the team was still somewhat segregated when Thomas got there in the 70s but winning took care of that. That’s one of the things I love about football, it’s not about black and white, but it’s about being a productive and trusted member of a team with every member of the teams striving toward the same goal. That beats all of the racial crap, racism and race baiting we have to hear about in the MSM day in and day out. The IR story was great too and the story about how Lambert cracked the starting lineup. Thanks for posting, Vox.

jarvis wasn't great at rushing the passer but he was decent against the run and not terribly lost in coverage. if he wasn't a first round pick and expected to get sacks on a consistant basis, he would have been decent depth as a 3rd, 4th or 5th rounder. it was a matter of where we picked him. richardson and stephenson were terrible first rounders, golson was a terrible 2nd rounder. we did find a guy that played with golson however later in mike hilton and we probably saw him in action while looking at golson the year prior. he worked out well and they should have kept him.

Richarson was terrible. I named my Golden Retriever after the Steelers first and second round draft picks that year. Huey Graham (after Huey Richardson and Jeff Graham).

Richardson was awful but he was a panic pick, didnt want him, dont even know if they scouted him. Steelers had three players lined up that they wanted and all three were taken right before their pick in succession. One being Alvin Harper which would have been sweet had they gotten him. Dont remember the other two, don’t think they amounted to anything either.

Bush was a player they loved and thought would succeed Shaizer, spent a lot of time scouting him and again, gave up picks for him. Thats a big swing and a miss.

Burns is right there for me as well but I think he was another panic pick, don’t know if anyone had a first rd grade on him.

Round three, tough one, both among my favorite Steelers.

I would have to say Blount but I want the boards vote on this:

    Mel Blount

    Or

    Hines Ward

Both of their style of play caused rule changes.

Mel is in the HOF, 4 SB rings.

Ward may be in the HOF some day, 2 SB rings.

    What say You Steelers Nation???

Wow…tough one. But I’ll always give the edge to the 70s dynasty guys since that’s when I came of age as a Steelers fan, so I’m going with Blount. He and Hines are kinda 1 and 1(a) though.

For me it is Blount, simply because his play actually changed the league. Ward is a sentimental favorite because higher picked WR were taken after him the the couple of drafts by the Steelers, but he was that one guy you could always count on regardless of the situation, catching or blocking he gave it all..and usually with that Hines smile we all loved.

I’m not going to say too much about Bush because I was pimping him to be our 2nd round pick before he moved into the 1st round consideration. When he started getting 1st round buzz, I shifted my pimpage to Germaine Pratt in the 2nd or Drue Tranquill later.

Bush would have been over drafted had we taken him at pick #20. To move up 10 spots by trading away 2nd and 3rd round picks was an extraordinarily bad decision.

Kendrell Bell. He was a 2nd round pick that was awesome for one year. Got hurt , and was never the same. I don't think He is(a bust) because...like Bush .....He was good...so not really a mark against the front office .....how did they.... like with Bush ....know He wouldn't bounce back from a injury.
Bust IMO is when they are never good...., and to say Bush, and Bell have never been good is just plain wrong. JMO

No disrespect for Ward....He maybe My 2nd, or 3rd favorite.

Bush was never awesome and was a top 10 pick. Top 10 pick should be a HR, especially when you give up draft capital to get them.

I don't think this is even close. Mel was arguably the best at his position when he played. Ward was never considered to be THE best during his career. This isn't to belittle Ward's career. He was a great Steeler, but Mel was greater.

Of course this is just my opinion, but isn't my opinion the only one that really counts?

I like Him so much I have 2 of Ward jerseys, and I watch Him coach every week, and Lose. LoL. His team just got beat out ....so No playoffs for Him.
Matter of fact I believe Woodson is out also. They both have some of the worst teams in the XFL. Goes to show .....even if You have been a great player.....doesn't mean You know everything You should know about football. They both are getting spanked every week by old coaches.

Kendrell Bell was NFL defensive rookie of the year, second team All Pro and made the Pro Bowl in his first year. Nagging injuries derailed his career. He did play 4 years with the Steelers. Although his last season here they did offer a contract even after his shoulder surgery which he turned down then interviewed with the Giants and failed the physical then signed with the Chiefs.

He was explosive, something Bush could never be.

Bush had a decent rookie season but nothing like Bells.

Bell played with reckless abandon and never shied away from contact. Bush played very tentatively and seemed to be trying to avoid contact much of the time. Even before the injury he wasn’t the most physical guy and I want my ILBs to be the most physical players on the field.

It had to be Blount. Ward was great, but not close to Blount's level.

Agree with all of this, but the tape, promise, and 1st season showing wasn’t the problem or illusion. It’s just as much his head and his attitude. How they weren’t able to read this on him during his visits and convos is perplexing. He’s kind of a fraud.

The capital we wasted on him is showing up big time in this current team and a huge reason we have so many holes to fill.

It’s not so much that he’s a bust, but that draft package was a HUGE BUST by the draft team. To give what they did the guy has to be a crystal clear stud and not just a starter. AND he was their 2nd fav Devon! Enormous miss.

Getting back to his immature and diva seeming attitude that they should have spotted and shied away from - It didn’t serve him well here, and as of now I see no evidence it will serve him well going forward in the Not For Long game or life in general.
