I agree, if he's not looking for too much money and wants to play for a playoff team. If he played for the Steelers he could get back at the Browns twice a year.

Maybe we could angle Nelson with Whitner being available.

Yeah, if the price is right.
He does seem to be in decline, due to age, but I`d still take a chance on him.
If he couldn`t show he was worth a starting position in camp, he`d still be a reliable back-up, at worst.
I`m thinking his performance last season was hampered by injuries, but I`m not sure if that`s accurate, or not.
    GO STEELERS!

    I agree, but I'm thinking we'll blink.

I think Whitner and Mitchell would complement each other well.

I don't think we should be looking for a temporary fix at this position. Stop putting bandaids in the secondary and let's surgically repair the secondary. Its time to get some young studs in there for the future

I think he's worth a look, but I expect he'll see some decent offers. If that's not the case, he could be a nice 1-2 year option to help bridge the gap to a draft pick working his way into the lineup.

i am torn on this one. i was against allen sticking around last year because i wanted some new blood in here. i would have felt more comfortable if golden had surpassed him then and now we would know. on the other hand i want new blood now but want to know if golden can hold down the spot until the new guy is ready. bringing in another will allen (whitner) may delay a new guy even more.

Yeah, but got to keep in mind that we're a now team. A guy like Whitner or Nelson can bring a lot of savvy to our back end, especially since it seems clear that our only corner with extensive experience will be Gay. I love a lot of the safeties in this draft, but I'm not sure any of them are going to play like savvy vets in 2016.

thats why i'm hoping in year 5 that golden can be that savvy vet along with mitchell. i'm also hoping we draft a safety with more smarts than shamarko and he can pick up the defense quicker. grant could be a key factor in all of this in his second year. there should be a big jump in him year one to year two. if he's the guy. i'm not as much of a we have to win it this year or it's over guy as some others. i think it's still a building process going on. i'm not buying into an all or nothing year in 2016. i do believe we will be better on defense and maybe not quite as good on offense this year. i hate to say it but i think our run will be in 2017, but we could if everything goes well be a contender this year. i'm not sure whitner gets us over the hump. he may not hurt us but i don't think he's that missing piece either.

Adding a few pieces that can help push us to the top in 2016 is not nearly as dramatic as "all or nothing." Bringing in a vet safety for a year or two won't ruin us for 2017 and beyond. I don't think there's any doubt that we can contend in 2016, and if there are affordable upgrades available we should consider them. I'm guessing we won't do it, but I think we should kick the tires.

i don't mean you as that all or nothing guy elvis. just want to clear that up. many on here are.

as i've said, i'm not opposed to whitner but i know how MT likes to hang on to vets sometimes to a fault. ike, cortez, troy, allen as examples. i feel he almost has to have a younger guy that he has to go to to make him do it. whitner would just delay that i think. i do think it's goldens time to be the bridge and as i said grant could be key in all of this.

Statistically, even if we were drafting high in the first round, it is doubtful we could get a rookie who would be capable of starting game 1 without screwing up. Screw ups at safety cost games and knocks you out of the playoffs. I'm not interested in sacrificing a season of Ben to let rookies learn. Fortunately, the Steelers don't do this.

Right now, we need someone who won't screw up until a young guy can learn. That's what practice is for.

2 places I don't want to start a rookie who isn't ready, safety and left tackle. Cornerback is even iffy if you don't keep a safety on top, and that limits your defense.

Remember now, although that vet is savvy...he's not savvy in our system. So, just like Mitchell, it took that first year to get acclimated to our system. Savvy will only get you but so far in your latter years....youth and growing pains brings on experience and "energy for days"

Even if they signed Whitner, they should still draft a safety within the first 4 rds.
