Don't think McClain will be a Steeler (sorry Hack)...

I understand Hack's argument here, but the arrests realy aren't the largest part of him not coming here IMO. How often do we go out and get a difference maker as a signing? Very, very, very rarely. Most guys we get are role players....that is it.

    Seriously.
Although giving a false name is a big no-no, but I'd chalk that up to just being flat out dumb.

    Wonder what name he gave?

I'm thinking Rolando Smith but I can almost hear him say Al Davis too.

Didn't he have some kind of gun related arrest too? I really don't know. I might be mixing him up with someone else.

Most of us know "The Steeler Way" of clean guys is largely baloney. Sure, the FO cuts 3rd stringers when they get into trouble with the law, but it doesn't even cross their minds when it's someone the team needs, like Ben or Harrison. And of course we really are miles ahead of teams like the Cowboys and Bengals, who always seem tickled pink to snap up the latest felon to be released from jail. Frankly, I'm all for staying away from bad character guys, but I care way more about the direct effect it has on a team. For example, bad locker room guys, guys that stir crap up, guys that bring (and love) a media circus and cause distractions. If McClain is a great teammate and everything, I don't really care about his criminal history. As long as he's not in danger of being put in jail and being out of commission, that is. But is he in that kind of trouble? I'm not sure.

In any case, if we can get him for a bargain basement price, I don't see any risk at all. He gets arrested again? Cut him right away. He doesn't fit the system? He's a bad teammate after all? Cut him right away. To me that reinforces "The Steeler Way" as much or more than not signing him at all. He's got talent and could help bridge the gap to Spence, IF Spence even turns out to be a good, starting quality, healthy player. If Spence doesn't work out for whatever reason, we're going to be in big trouble if we don't get someone else in here. It would also be excellent insurance for the draft, so we don't have to reach for the need and take someone unworthy of a given draft pick. If we were picking 12th I'd feel better, knowing it wouldn't take too much to get Te'o, but as it is I don't think he's a realistic option at all. He could wind up going top 5, and unless he runs a 5.2 40, I doubt he slips out of the top 10.

Edit: After reading the article (duh), I see that he was arrested for and convicted of intentionally firing a gun next to a man's face. That sounds pretty freakin' serious. The charges were mysteriously dropped when McClain appealed, most likely because he literally paid off the victim to drop the charges (that's legal). But the good news is that the rap sheet is short enough that it's not like he'll wind up in jail for a speeding ticket.

I thought there was an incident where he was accused of shooting at a police car, too. I could be wrong on that, though.

more like indignant, entitled, contemptuous etc.. maybe that's the kind of nasty we need. sure hasn't shown it on the field in oakland though. sounds like something you would have expected out of joey porter.

I wonder if he really wrote the apostrophe in "y'all." If so, good for him.

The crime seems minor enough to me, but the fact that he fought the cops on it instead of just taking the ticket? The fact that he's still blaming police for some kind of conspiracy? The fact that he expects everyone to recognize him without a football uniform on? He might be a little bit nuts, and that doesn't interest me.

I wonder how the cops knew that wasn't his name, though. What if it was? That would be really insensitive of them.
