Just talked to a woman who's a secretary to a local yacht broker and she told me she used to work for Scott Shields here in San Diego. I had to look him up 'cause he didn't sound familiar. Played safety in '99. Was he any good, or just a back up?

Think I know the baseball player with that name.

I see the Scott Shields who played with the Steelers actually had 4 INTs as a rookie not bad. Seems like he disappeared in a hurry.

Shields was drafted in the 2nd round, 1999. He had a good game in '99 vs. the expansion Browns. He was gone after the 2000 season.

99 draft landed the Steelers some good players in the later rounds... Joey Porter, Aaron Smith, Amos Zereoue and Kris Brown. 99 was the year Steelers could have drafted Jevon Kearse instead of Troy Edwards. That was almost as bad as missing out on Marino in '83.

He was the classic case of possessing all the physical skills (size, speed) but just failed miserably at instincts, in the worse way. He was a 2nd-round pick and a complete bust in every way.

He was gone after just one season, and barely ever saw the field. He was just awful.

I remember several busts. This has nothing to do with football.

Yeah I remember him. Like so many, he was a victim of unrealized potential.
