    IMG_1155.jpeg IMG_1153.jpeg IMG_1152.jpeg I had a great crop this year

I’ve been selecting from different varieties of hard neck for about 10 years

    Sure

    Ditto tomatoes

    But homegrown is much better

And garlic is very easy to grow you just need to have cold winters

I thought about entering the county fair but then at best I would have a cheap blue ribbon that nobody including myself would care about

Although my “neighbors” won grand champion dairy cow last year and that is impressive

Gilroy doesn't get particularly cold and they bill themselves as the garlic capital of the world.
I grow society garlic, but that's an ornamental landscape plant.

    Yes and no

    When cooked they are similar

Raw softneck is mild and can be used raw

Raw hardneck can be pretty hot and powerful plus hardneck cloves tend to be bigger about the size of a thumb sometimes and are easier to peel

I roast hardneck on the grill and then it’s great for mashed potatoes

I grew an herb garden bout 4 years ago and had garlic as part of it. Grew well. I don't anymore since I can pick up fresh garlic at the store.

I was going to say this. I have family members in Arkansas that grow it, and it's far from cold here.

First off those two are more impressive than growing a bulb of garlic

Second I’m at the stage in life I’m getting stuff out of my house

One of my relatives was looking at a somewhat valuable piece of artwork and said she liked it so I sent it home with her

Soft neck originally came from southern Italy

Hardneck comes from places like Russia Romania and Germany

Love garlic but would never want a cold winter. We in Jersey feel our tomato's are the best. When we owned a real home with a yard we had a garden. Now in a mobile home park people actually grow tomato's in pots here.

Would love to have some of your garlic to put into my artichokes.

My tomatoes and chiles are doing remarkably well this year, (when I can keep the dog from eating the tomatoes)! I pretty much have to grow them in containers since the soil in Santee is uniquely suited to growing rocks!

You’re 100% correct about tomatoes. Nothing beats a good homegrown heirloom tomato
