Did the Saints tamper with Keenan Lewis?

I think there is a legitimate reason to believe they did and I believe Keenan Lewis's own words may implicate them. A full week and a half before any team could LEGALLY have any contact with a player's representative, Lewis got on twitter and essentially celebrated because things had been worked out. I don't remember the exact quote, but he talked about the Lord working things out for him and about how we'd be hearing news about him real soon. He signed with his hometown team, the NO Saints, shortly after the free agency period began but it sounds like things were worked out well before then.

I mentioned this in another thread and I'm calling the Saints out. What do you think? Did the Saints tamper?

I think he did have a deal in place.

I think Willie Gay did the same thing on twitter with us....

I think the rule is teams can't contact the players, but they can talk to the agents...I'm not sure though.

I saw a quote recently from a big name agent who admitted that tampering was rampant at the combine, but I can't find it now. Anyway, does it happen? I'm sure it happens all the time. It's certainly possible that the Saints tampered with Lewis, and it's also possible that the Dolphins tampered with Wallace. I recall a Dolphins' columnist breaking news Monday that the deal was done, and it just needed to be signed. How about Martellus Bennet? When did he sign with the Bears, like 4:10 PM? However, I'm sure that if the NFL investigates any allegations of tampering, they will find actual evidence hard to come by.

I think the rule is that the teams and the player representatives can begin talking 3 days before the free agency signing period begins. I could be wrong though.

Communications could be had between agents and teams for the 3 days leading up to 4 PM last Tuesday, but terms could not be agreed to - even unwritten deals. The NFL released a memo the Friday before free agency that clarified the rules and warned teams that they would investigate any suspected tampering.

I couldn't care less for 2 reasons. 1) If the guy didn't want to be here, adios. 2) If they worked out a deal before they were allowed to, they would have worked one out after they were allowed to.

    That is exactly right.

Gay was cut therefore he was not any team's property and could talk openly with ANY team.

Lewis was still the property of the Steelers and unable to talk to any teams other than the Steelers until 3 days prior to the start of free agency.

I would care if it gave the Steelers one of the Saints draft picks or some salary cap relief!

Absolutely! Does anybody know the penalty for tampering?

    From Bountygate to Tampergate!

Oh jeeez. As someone said crap like this goes on all the time...big whoop. But as far as this specific case...just because a person...who happens to be an NFL player (whos going to be an FA) posts a message on Twitter...saying something to the effect of...good news and by keeping the faith good things happen and he's not telling anybody (though if you clicked on the longer version of the tweet it took you to Twitlonger, but it didnt show as Lewis' account...but some other person...so that there was odd, but w/e)...it doesn't even mean anything...it could be non-football it could mean anything...ANYTHING.

Some of you just either have too much time on your hands...or are just looking for things to complain or ***** about...in this day and age the media does enough of this type of crap...leave that to them. He's gone...its over...done...finished...NONE of this BS matters.

Just because "crap like this goes on all the time" doesn't make it right. They say that teams steal signals a lot too but that cost the Pats a lot of money and some draft picks. They say that teams put bounties on players but that cost the Saints dearly. Just because something happens a lot doesn't mean it's ok to do it. If there is a penalty in place to deal with this kind of stuff they oughtta enforce it. They keep talking about protecting the integrity of the game and changing rules and keeping an eye our for steroids or whatever but I guess you'd just turn a blind eye to that too? Jack was just asking a question of whether or not this might happen. Guess what? If the Steelers did it I would be in total favor of them getting penalized too. In the words of Ronald Reagan "You don't choose which laws you will obey". That is all.

I never said it shouldn't go unpunished/etc if the league can prove a player/team/etc has done this (just like in the examples you gave). Also by saying "crap like this goes on all the time" I'm not saying its right...I'm saying its not unheard of, out of the ordinary, etc (see the "goes on all the time" part)...no matter how against the rules it is. So stop putting words in my mouth. thanks!

Well you used the words "big whoop" and said "none of this matters". That would imply that you think it should be water under the bridge. But if you say you didn't mean that then I'll take your word for it.
