I actually said at the start of this year that I wouldn't be surprised if this were his last season. I still stand by it. I really think Troy wants to hang it up as a Steeler and we know that his wife is more than likely lobbying him to call it quits as well. I hate to see it happen but it's just a part of the business I guess. I really want to think of Troy as the gamebreaking and revolutionary player that he was. The guy that flew to the ball and made incredible interceptions and forced fumbles and blew up plays in the backfield before the qb even knew what hit him. I don't want to see him as a shell of his former self that is more of a liability than an asset and I don't think he wants to be that either. NFL.COM said the other day that he is definitely not in our plans for 2015. I hope he's not in another team's plan because I really just can't think of him in anything other than black and gold.

Hmm. Well I guess he went off to the big time and left us small timers behind. LOL. SBD if you're reading this stand up and be counted because I'm curious if that is the site you wrote for or not.

I really don't care if he plays 1 season on another team; it's happened a thousand times and it never diminishes a legacy. Franco, Emmitt Smith, Tony Dorsett, Rice, Joe Namath, Joe Montana - they all had meaningless seasons with other teams and that did nothing to hurt any of their legacies. No one even thinks about it.

It might mean another year with paychecks and if he can find work, then whatever. He should be set for life financially, as he does not come across as one of these dummies who blows all his money like TO. By the way, I doubt any team would sign him. They all saw what we saw last year. He is now a liability, even though some commentators said otherwise, they were wrong.

Your initial argument was that the Steelers held on to players too long (past their prime) and from that standpoint, the list you provided did not support that argument. If you want to argue poor personnel/roster moves, then fine. We can all discuss and agree on many on that list. But Kordell Stewart is likely one of those that doesn't fit either. I am one of the few who will defend Stewart, not in that he was a good QB, because in many respects he was average. But I also think he was underutilized and was a more athletic QB than the read option QBs of today, who've had mixed success. I contend that no QB has ever had more pure athletic ability than he did, and it was wasted on the attempt to turn him into a pocket QB.

I don't think one more year will tarnish his legacy but I think if he wants to take the Brett Favre route that he could run that risk. I don't think he will take that route, mind you, but that's really more of what I was getting at.

I agree that Kordell wasn't really used right. "Steelers football" is really sort of a code word for "tradition all the way" in that the "identity" of a Steelers team has to always be that we just play the most conventional style of football and still succeed at doing it. At least that is the way it was under Cowher. I consider Tomlin to be much more progressive in his offensive approach than Cowher ever was. If Kordell had played with a Chip Kelly type of coach there's no telling what he could have done. He was just sort of a square peg in a round hole for us.

Yep, Stewart arrived too soon, I think he would have had a much better chance succeeding in todays NFL.

When the Steelers drafted Hines, they then had two players who could run, catch, and throw. Then came Randle-El in 2002, and they had three.

And none of these abilities were put to good use.

It wasn't until 2005, with the Randle-El to Hines connection that we saw this.

I just shudder at the possibilities had the Kordell + Hines or Kordell + Hines + Randle-El combos been put to good use. I always thought the possibilities should have left defenses pooping their pants.

I can't believe this thread has morfed into talking about Kordell Stewart. My 2 cents not that it matters. When Stewart was Slash man was that an awesome display. Would have been a great receiver I believe. But alas he wanted to play QB. Bad decision. A running QB that was not a great thrower or good at reading defenses. JB was the main cog. Stewart was also bad in playoff games a pick machine. And at the end benched for Kent Graham  Sorry I'm not one to say the Kordell years sans him being Slash were something I want to remember.

I hope Troy retires...then goes in the Hall of Fame.

Kordell wasn't ahead of his time. He lacked the accuracy, especially down the field unless they were wide open, and he didn't do very well going through progressions early in his career.

Before this past season Troy said he thought he could play 2 more years, so one year is down... I think he wants to play one more year unless he learned this year that he can't do it anymore?

I read somewhere that if Troy retires rather than being cut the Steelers could get a chunk of his signing bonus back. Now does that mean he would have to write them a check? In this case he would be a fool to retire. Or would this just be cap space money?
