If no one else has said this, let me be the first to say, I truly believe David Paulson, the TE we drafted in round 7 will make this roster. 2 of our other TEs we currently have, Pope, Johnson or Saunders are going to be going home.

Agreed ... Im still hoping they use Johnson as the official FB until the find someone who could be a real FB for us.
Pope is still a viable option for us with Saunders being down and out for 4 games. I honestly can't see them cutting Saunders as they have stuck by him this far and has put up some okay - decent tape.
Paulson write up on Bleacherreport Draft Grading *** - Paulson could make this interesting. He's versatile and is a good receiver. I'd say his blocking skills are above-average, and I think he could end up becoming a great second tight end for this team.

I have heard a lot of people talk about his size, or better his lack thereof, but if you watch his highlights you will be impressed. He knows how to get open, and as the #2 TE, compare his size to that guy in NE. If he can show he can get open at this level, he has the hands and the route running to play in the NFL. He made plays against some really talented USC teams.

Definetly see ths upside to a smaller weight prototype TE, definetly has hands, route running skills and blocking is pretty on par to NFL standards, just wondering what happens during a full season if he is blasted over the middle to many times at his size... im sure the Coaches will have him pick up a few pounds, but like any other prospect we will have to see to know. Here's to hoping we have a Diamond in the rough with this kid

I've seen this guy ranked as high as round 4...and I saw a little of him during the combine and liked what I saw.

It should be interesting on how things go between Paulson, Saunders, Pope and Johnson. As others have said I dont think they would cut Saunders based on his potential...but they might. Then that leaves Pope/Johnson and Paulson. Pope is a Haley guy and was just signed...but no guarantee he'd make the team. Johnson has been the main FB for the last couple years...Paulson might be able to play that spot too I've heard. Pope is a big question mark. In reality it could come down to Paulson versus Johnson for the last spot. I dont see them keeping 4. Saunders doesnt count against the roster while suspended so when he comes back someone would have to go. Paulson could be PS bound...just depends on what they think of Johnson.

You make a great point on Paulson in FB role I will look for the tape and post link, as I have seen him play it near goal line a few times . Like you said Saunders could go but I just cannot see it he had a private conference with the brass from what Bleacherreport published right after the incident and he vowed to show the team his worth and dedication to making it back and from what it seems especially after the drafting of Adams the team likes a member who takes a pro active approach to their own off field issues. so to me I pretty much see Paulson unless he does something critical to make his value known in Offseason/pre season he is PS bound which would make it Pope vs Johnson as we usually only keep 3 TE on at a time alot of people say 4 thisd year and I know Haley will run a different offensive ship but Tomlin likes his back up defensive line and Offensive lines dressed for each game. Very excited for camps to start to see what comes out of this crazy situation last year too many WR this year too many TE im not complaining  sit back an enjoy the show

Seems kinda small for a TE these days but I know very little about this pick. They say he has good hands and runs good routes but doesn't have the speed to separate himself from defenders. Like I said, don't know myself. But it can't be too hard to beat out David Johnson.....can it?

Paulson has really REALLY good hands for sure, but athletically he doesn't seem to be even on the level as Matt Spaethe. He may struggle getting open in the NFL.

If he can catch the ball and make it a few steps ohhh and actually make a block as a FB he is in like Flynn man. But his size like i said is the new prototype for TE his speed could cost him though thats for sure but now they start em small develop all skills than bulk em up make em blockers . At least thats what SI says is starting to happen.

The kid is 6'3 240 pounds, and depending upon how you use him that will be okay.

Look at some of the other guys who have shown they can play in the NFL:

    Brett Celek - 6'4" 255
    Chris Cooley - 6'3" 255
    Owen Daniels - 6'3" 242
    Vernon Davis - 6'3" 250
    Dustin Keller - 6'2" 250
    Kellen Winslow - 6'4" 240
    Aaron Hernandez - 6'1" 245

I don't think the kid has all star potential by any means, but I do think if he can run good routes he can be used effectively in our passing game.

Glad you posted this. It kind of puts his size into a better perspective for me. I guess I always thought most of the guys you listed were taller than that. :hmmm:

I'm still concerned with his supposed lack of speed though. What's the scoop on his blocking skills? Anyone have a solid read on this kid?

i think there is a very good chance that we taketh away from one position and giveth to another.

    WR's on the current roster:
    beiler 6-0 1 year guy
    brown starter
    clemons 6-2 draft pick
    cotchery vet
    dixon 6-5 222
gilreath 1 yr. guy good KR
    maze 5-8 KR
    sanders starter 2-3-4 receiver KR
    stewart 1 yr. 6-3
lyons 6-8 233 listed on roster as TE, played both in college, was WR here last preseason
    wallace ???
    williams year 3 guy.
    young 1 yr. 6-1
    this concludes our wr tour.

    TE's on the roster:

    D johnson 6-2 260
    lyons listed as TE
    mccoy 6-2 240 actually 3rd year here
    miller starter extrordinaire
    paulson 6-4 241 draft pick
    pope FA vet 7 yrs. 6-8 264
saunders 6-5 270 year 2 suspended first 4 games. showed last year as a blocker and rec.
W johnson listed as the only FB. played TE and FB in college. hand picked from wvu pro day by MT to sign. went undrafted last year. pretty good with the ball in his hands.

i lumped W. johnson with the TE's. if they keep him for FB a spot will have to come from somewhere.
if we keep one less WR then last year, i think they could possibly keep one of these TE's instead and use him as an extra WR if needed in a pinch. or package wise. hard to say how many we keep at which position.

    4 wr's
    4 te's
    3 rb's
    1 fb/te
    10 ol
    3 qb's
25 that would be our O. actually 5 TE's total on the active roster. maybe?

hard to say right now. w. johnson has worked his butt off to get bigger, faster and stronger. i think it's going to be a battle between himself, paulson and DJ for the FB/TE spot. paulson and will johnson i think have the best shot. i think DJ's days are numbered.

i do think lyons has a shot as a 4th. dixon is a big target too. those two will fight it out for that spot.

    heath-- lock
    pope-- lock
    saunders -- stays

that's how i see it as of now. camp can change things. i do think haley wants to keep speed, and i think he want's big targets also.

I think you could be close. I could see:

    5 WR
    4 TEs (including the TE/FB)
    4 RBs
    3 QBs
    9 OL

No way an NFL team would only keep 4 WRS...
