Could we keep James Harrison by doing this?

I hear ya, Cajun. Those Performance Incentive laden contracts get complicated. I'm pretty certain that the incentives in this hypothetical contract would be considered NLTBE, based on his recent production.

Hypothetical example incentives: $2.5 Mil bonus if he gets 10+ sacks. $3 Mil bonus if he starts 14 games (or plays x amount of snaps etc...).

Since he didn't achieve either of those last year (or the year before), those would be considered Not Likely To Be Earned. Either way, I don't believe there's much likelihood of that contract coming to fruition.

Not trying to pull you deeper into a conversation you don't want to have, just wanted to share what I know about it.

I don't think this is too outrageous of a viewpoint. His play seems to be declining and it's not matching his paycheck.

Who, other than Goodell, has he burned his bridges with?

I do, however, think 92 is a good teammate. I think he has his own leadership qualities. I think he's a quiet leader and leads by example. I think his work ethic is strong and, even though his body seems to be breaking down, I believe he puts in the effort to stay in the best shape possible. If you follow him on FB or Twitter, you'll see he's always getting acupuncture done, in warmer climates training in the off-season, etc. I believe he is dedicated to his craft and I believe his attitude towards his work does rub off on his teammates.

We have a few veterans commanding a lot of money that are on the fence based on recent performance and 92 is one of em. Based on his entire body of work, I'd like to give him one more year to see if, coming into the year healthier than he's been in some time, he can bounce back and produce like the '08, '09, '10 vintage. I saw Farrior do it in '10. I'd like to see 92 do it in '13.

Thanks TTF for the knowledge drop. Its not that I don't want to have a conversation on this, its that I don't want to speak on something I know little about and sound like I'm well versed in that subject. I'm not that kind of guy. I once knew about LTBE's/NLTBE's after researching them years ago after I heard John Clayton speak about how the Pats were using them. Thats was years ago and I actually have not thought about them since.

This is why I LOVE this board. If you want to know something, SOMEBODY on this board will be able to help you.

Looks like Harrison could be released soon.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Steelers have reached an impasse in contract restructuring talks with James Harrison.
Per the Post-Gazette, "the chance has increased that the star linebacker could be released soon." Added beat reporter Ed Bouchette on ESPN Thursday, "They've been talking all day and they've gotten nowhere. ... Neither side has come to any kind of agreement on this." The Steelers want Harrison to take a pay cut off his $6.57 million base salary. So far, Harrison's camp is balking. Mar 7 - 6:05 PM

IMHO neither the Steelers nor JH would be interested in an incentive based contract. As mentioned by TTF earlier, it would not be a restructure, but would amount to a pay cut. JH or any player for that matter, likely would only take a pay cut if they believed they are about to get cut at their current salary and wouldn't be picked up by any other team. If they are going to go to the trouble to rework his contract to effect a pay cut, than that's what I see it being, plain and simple. If either JH or the Steelers believed he had the potential to have a 10+ sack season, why would they ask him to take a pay cut?
