There are 39 seconds left in the game Team Def is out of TO's and team Off is leading 24-20

Team Off completes a pass for 11 yds. Loses game. Yes, this loses the game.

The very next play a fumble is forced and team Def returns it for a TD.

Any penalty stops the clock. It does not start until the next snap.

I was going to make the penalty a personal foul where after a DEf player sees the completion
he punches an Off player and throws him on the ground and kicks him. This would be noticed
I think, but I will settle for Defensive holding but the WR made the catch anyway.

Ok I’ll bite. There are plenty of ways that could happen.

    1. It was 4th and more than 11 yards, so the 11 yard completion stops the clock. For whatever reason, team off went for the 1st down instead of punting.
    2. After the completion the ball was fumbled and recovered by the defense.
    3. A penalty

I’m sure I could come up with more. It’s an unlikely scenario, but it could happen and I’m sure it has.

For the benefit of the skeptics.

    [From the official NFL gamebook]

    3-9-PIT 26 (3:14) (Shotgun) B.Roethlisberger pass short right to J.Samuels to PIT 46 for 20 yards (J.McCourty). P22
Timeout #1 by NE at 02:58.

    1-10-PIT 46 (2:58) J.Samuels left tackle to NE 39 for 15 yards (J.McCourty; D.McCourty). R23
PENALTY on NE-M.Brown, Defensive Holding, 5 yards, enforced at NE 39. X24

    1-10-NE 34 (2:52) S.Ridley left guard to NE 31 for 3 yards (E.Roberts).
Timeout #2 by NE at 02:46.

    2-7-NE 31 (2:46) J.Samuels right tackle to NE 30 for 1 yard (K.Van Noy, L.
Timeout #3 by NE at 02:41.

Did you really think the Steelers did not want the clock to run after Samuels run?

The rule is in the last 5 min of the 4thQ the next play after a penalty starts on the snap.

The scenario I described is farfetched but it points out the stupidity of the rule and it absolutely would be a legal by rule. [and no save your breath declining the penalty the clock still does not start
    until the snap.

It was discussed already here I believe. If not ,what happened was there was a penalty on NE for defensive holding. By some dumb rule and probably something NE may have exploited on purpose the clock stops inside of 5 minutes. A loophole in the rules that should probably be fixed.

Exactly! I did not see any mention of this[sorry]so I figured I'd call attention to it.
It really burned me up. They picked up as much as 50 seconds or more with that penalty
    and also saved a TO.

OK, I'm going to let it go now and get ready for NO.

They really should reexamine that rule and make at least one exception.

Also .. remember the game last year when Patriots were punting at the end if a game from their endzone and every ****er held their man until the punter could run around in the endzone and run out the clock... got penalized yardage but you can't put time back on the clock... game over..

Geez, even after the once/decade win over NE , a thread that still gripes about NE's exploitation o f the rules.

Question: why don't the Steelers do it, if it's so successful? Ethics? Not bloody likely. Lack of study of the rule book? Probably. If the bad guys twist the rules, and the good guys don't; then the good guys are asking to be jobbed, until the rules get changed.

Pittsburgh Dad said it. He knew they were cheating.

Now, go back and prove the holding came after Samuels had a first down. If it comes before first down, you’re buying time, but hoping a run doesn’t wind the clock on the next play.

This is an amazingly incoherent thread. But,at the risk of getting into the pit of nonsense I'll offer this:

Ok, the clock stop on the D penalty as outlined by the ADD original poster. But if it's a def Hold or a personal foul, the avenue of chicanery offered by Elmer Fudd in the original post, the off gets an automatic first down. Yeah, the clock stops, but you get a fresh set of downs. In almost every case, that's a better deal for the offense.

Right. If there’s chicanery, they call offensive holding and negate the big run. That said, I didn’t read this as the OP saying that the call was made to stop the clock and benefit the Pats. I read the post to just be pointing out the stupidity of the rule.
