He'll surpass Cowher with regular season wins this year and it'll be apples to apples as it's his 15th season.

Both went to 2 Superbowls each winning one. Tomlin arguably won his with Cowher's players. Cowher had early success with mostly Noll players. So the argument goes both ways.

I believe they're tied in division championships. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Cowher took the team to more AFCCGs. Arguably better overall playoff success.

Cowher only had a franchise QB for 2 years. One being his rookie season. Tomlin had him his entire tenure. Tomlin also had arguably considerably more offensive talent at his disposal. Cowher had more consistently dominant defenses.

Practically a wash. Maybe it's because he always reminded me of my Dad albeit younger, but I give the edge to Cowher. Neither are in Noll's tier.

Neither are in Noll's Tier because of how free agency changed things.

Yes that and the fact that neither are nearly as good of a football coach.

I agree. Steelers would have not had those players for SB 3 & 4.

Just playing devils advocate here because I am a Chuck Noll fan and he is a big reason why I became a Steelers fan but I wonder sometimes if we give him too much accolades.

Obviously he deserves enormous credit for assembling that 70’s team and turning the franchise around but from a purely coaching perspective, do we overrate him? You know other fans are thinking who couldn’t win 4 SB’s with those players and when you look at Nolls record without those Hall of Famers, they kind of have a point. It got so bad that even Steelers fans were calling for his head saying the game past him by.

I still think he is one of the best coaches ever but, I’m a homer Steelers fan :steelflag:

    I rank them:

    Noll
    Cowher
    Tomlin

I don’t acknowledge anything before the 70’s, those coaches don’t count :lolol:

Yeah. The 80s were a bummer. But you don't draft so low for so long without eventually running out of top tier talent.

Noll was convinced before he retired that he had the pieces in place for another Superbowl team. Cowher proved him right. Who knows if Noll could've won more if he stayed (and was healthy)? But I'll bet dollars to donuts he would have done at least as well as Cowher. Probably better.

Noll was a fundamentals guy. Always had his team well prepared. And clearly knew how to build a team. Sure, if FA existed then he wouldn't have held that 70s team together as long. But neither would the Cowboys, Raiders, etc. And who's to say that FA wouldn't have helped him, especially in the 80s?

I rank them the same way, but Cower probably gave fans the most hope at a successful season year in and year out over the entire course of his career.
Most of those teams in the 80’s and Nolls first few years were not great.
He coached 21 years and I bet 40% of his seasons were ****.

Bro.... its 52 Years... even as a kid ( ages 8 to 18) who was really into it, and being as bad as the Steelers were in the 1960's, there probably wasn't a ton.

Your going to be anywhere from age 60 to 70 now days.

But I'm 36 and looking at research I will say that Buddy Parker might have been 4th best coach in Steelers history

I’d agree with that. Jock Sutherland was the only other coach above .500 he came in at .591 and Parker at .521 but he coached a lot more games, 104 to Sutherlands 23, so his .521 was more impressive.

I'm an old head around the board. Before Coach Noll ... we had a carousel of coaches. We were a sucky team. Even after changing our names. Chuck was the mastermind of changing the mindset and culture of this team ... The Steel Curtain! Cowher, took over and enhanced the physically of the team. Pound the opponents into submission ... Creating ... Blitzburgh! Tomlin, took over the reigns and well?? Maybe ... created the killer B's

I was pissed in 1934 when Art Sr. fired Forrest Douds and brought in Luby Dimeolo. Actually I don't go back that far but I do remember Buddy Parker, Mike Nixon and Bill Austin. The Steelers have only had 16 head coaches in their 88 year history. The Browns have had 12 since the year 2000.

    :hmm:

    Man oh man....

I would imagine 25+ NFL Teams would take an "idiot" with that many wins under his belt. For that matter, of those 25+, how many of them would actually let Tomlin and whomever their GM is build the team? Given how some owners love to be too hands on for their own good, I would wager only 7 of those teams would let Tomlin build his roster.... tops.

Getting back on topic, well earned indeed!! He definitely has his fair share of shortcomings but one cannot argue with the results. I also wish he could acquire another ring but I suppose that is something that is still being told as it stands. Who knows in all honesty how much more Tomlin wants to keep coaching in the Steel City? It is not like AR II is going to fire him anyways barring some extreme developments and/or circumstances.

He's a lock, he could have 200 wins or more when he retires.

    Tomlin’s 15th season isn’t over. He’ll surpass Cowher by a lot.

I saw Cowher’s total losses is 90. So how are they 1 game apart in total games in the middle of the season? Does this include playoffs?
