Najee has made comments in the past on the need to raise the RB wage and even associated his situation to some degree with Barkley

I suspect to some degree they discussed an extension and I’m guessing both sides were not in the same zip code

Using the 5th would have tied Najee up for two years of guaranteed salary

He would have been a disgruntled hostage

That would have been a mistake

There are a few posters here who have never run an organization and have no understanding of the human dynamic they only look at the 5th year dollar value

There is a litter box around here with a half dozen in it

Although I see they seem to have been staying put for a while

Players compete and succeed on the fifth-year option all the time. I can't fathom how anyone with a modicum of football knowledge wouldn't know that.

Well, not sure I agree that picking up the option making him overly disgruntled per se, but ideally I would've seen them using him as more of a safety net next year while featuring Warren and whomever they picked up in free agency/the draft more. That probably wouldn't have wagged his tail.

Najee’s contract is actually only for $5.25 M

    The rest is only incentives

And 31 teams were not even willing to beat that amount or give him more than a one year contract

This should put to rest any foolish thoughts that the Steelers should have used the 5th year option on him

But I can think of a small minority who will disagree rather than admitting they were wrong

    $3.75 million signing bonus

$1.5 million base salary (fully guaranteed)

The only thing that puts it to rest is them getting a viable replacement, something they do not have right now. If they think Warren and Gainwell can do what Harris and Warren did this past season, they are going to be very disappointed.
