    Thanks for posting those, GP.

'Colbert said retirement of Jason Worilds had no effect on 92 signing because Worilds "really wasn't in our plans."'

That's kind of an interesting thing for him to say.

    kovacevic sayd this :
    The facts are these:

    • The Steelers have a far tougher schedule in 2015, No. 1 in the NFL, actually. What worked to get them to 11-5 last season won’t be good enough this season.

    • The Steelers have a terrific offense, maybe the league’s most dynamic, and could be a legit Super Bowl contender with even a mediocre defense. They don’t have that.

    • The Steelers have money. They have cap room.

    • The Steelers have done next to nothing in terms of acquiring outside talent to address either of two vacancies — and they describe outside linebacker and cornerback the same way — since the season ended, even as they saw Jason Worilds retire and Brice McCain sign elsewhere.

    • The Steelers have now waited long enough that neither position could reasonably be upgraded through free agency, so they’ll have to wait for the draft. And neither position could be upgraded immediately through the draft. That’s not realistic.

So all of this is worth applauding … why exactly?

To this point in the offseason, the Steelers’ management has been utterly derelict in duty as it relates to making their defense viable and doing all they can to take advantage of a superior offense. And I can’t begin to understand why.

Who is this Kovacevic guy? "Utterly derelict in duty?" What exactly would this guy have had our front office do? Overpay just to look like they were doing something? Steelers beat writers usually make me go

As many here know, I can be critical of our coaches and front office, but you can't wave a magic wand and create viable, reasonably priced free agents out of thin air. This year's free agency crop stunk, especially at positions like corner and edge rusher. Some guys got paid big $$$ even though they were extremely unproven.

    Yeah agree 100%.

Sometimes the best action is inaction. We got our backup RB in FA at a reasonable price, and really only lost McCain. We shouldn't offer an inflated FA contract to subpar talent just so we can say we won the FA title.

    Agreed.

Yes, I'd like to see some more talent at OLB, but if it ain't there for the taking, then it ain't there.

I think Freak said in another thread that we#ll likely bring in one or two guys who are cut from other camps, particularly at DB - I tend to agree.

I agree with most of you guys on here. The FA market for CB was either a guy like Revis who was completely out of our price range.. And then guys like Patrick Robinson.. Cast offs from other teams. And we did bring in guys like him for a visit and obviously he wasnt a fit or we would have signed him. Losing Worilds and McCain stings a little. But that was just decent depth with McCain that had a year in the system and was a quality back up. But we weren't going to over pay someone like him. And i truly think after the Cortez Allen contract last year that the steelers FO is a little gun shy in trying not to over pay for mediocre talent. There's no denying that our secondary was just horrid last year. McCain came in and helped stop the bleeding some.. But it wasn't like he and Blake came in and became shutdown corners. We still were pretty bad. I think the steelers feel they can find someone who can fill in and do what McCain did in the draft.

Am I missing something here? What are the other reasons they're looking to draft a guy for?

Long term help. My interpretation was that they wouldn't let being short on CB talent (no pun intended) cloud their judgement.

He's a hack and after reading that imbecilic article, he would make Dan Snyder look like a genius if he ran a team.

wow. you guys think we the did the right thing? we essentually lost 2 cb's (ike and mccain) from a not very good defensive backfield. 3 if you want to count cortez allens lack of stepping in to take a spot layed out for him to take. this doesn't even take into account the safety postion. troy is in limbo and will allen has not been re-signed ( not that i'm complaining). shamrko showed absolutely nothing last year and tendered a guy in golden that has done nothing since he's been here.

really, you guys think we did the right thing?

it's not like skrine and a couple of other corners broke the bank in free agency. we must really be banking on guys like allen and webb and golden and thomas to completely turn their games around in one offseason. OLB i can see but corner baffles me.

As Elvis has said, the FA crop sucked so yes, I think they did the right thing by not overpaying for said sucky crop.

Skrine got Cortez money, basically had one good year, last season, I prefer not to gamble on a one year performance again as we did with Cortez whom we have to hope resembles the player they saw when they gave him that contract.

I think just about every contract handed out this season screamed of desperate and glad the Steelers didn't follow suit. Unfortunately the market played better for the players this off season than last.

So, yes, I'm happy with the Steelers offseason so far. Tied up their franchise QB, retained Moats, got a solid backup to Bell and just signed JH. Can't solve everything in FA, they'll have to turn to the draft.

i agree with blast , the only moves i would have done : cut allen save 1,5 milion sign mcain and cut thomas save 2 milion and sign red briant , then i would have cut troy and see if golsthon want to come for a cheap prove one year contract ..

edit : i would take a look at carriker since is healthy now

To be honest, I never thought he ever was in their 2015 plans. They paid over $1 mill a sack last year. Unless JW came in saying, "I am willing to be paid what I am worth" and came in for $3 mill or something like that (and it was very doubtful he ever would) then I figured they never really considered him in the 2015 plan or moving ahead. I think Troy is in the same boat, and the only difference is managing the PR thing a little more sensitively, considering he is one of the all-time team greats. They are spinning it like they are "being patient while Troy decides what he wants to do" but that is code for "We hope he retires so we can give him a graceful exit, but if he doesn't, he won't be playing here in 2015." They attempted to do the same kind of thing with LeBeau (bringing him back in a much-reduced role, but he was out as the DC and having decision making power) but Dick didn't agree it was time to retire. I really doubt TN is going to have much success, or, at least, not the level they think they will attain.

I mentioned that in another thread, he's participating in the veterans combine, certainly worth a look.
