I didn't expect Cockrell to get cut and given that they didn't get any players, I'm confused how this helps the team this year. Who is gonna cover the receiver the Pats just picked up?

I wonder what the conditions for the trade are and which rounds are available. Say he starts 16 games and plays solid, are we talking a 4th, 5th, or 6th?

Probably just another late-round pick we can use on the best long snapper in next year's draft...

So you're thinking the conditions are either a 6th or 7th?

I would think he had more value than that. They got a 6th for Coates.

All joking aside I think it's probably something like a 6th that could turn into a 5th if he plays 70% of their defensive snaps this year or something like that.

They're putting a huge amount on Haden panning out and staying healthy, and several unproven back ups.

Here's hoping the risk works out.

Agreed. It also tells me they really like Allen's potential to grow into a better outside corner than Ross's skills right now.

This is a mistake unless they're picking up another CB we don't know about. Cockrell was our 2nd best corner last year and we have no depth there.

It's good business. The Giants have a need, why just cut him and let him go to the Giants or elsewhere for nothing? Same with Coates. Hey, a mid or low draft pick is better than nothing. Good job, Colbert

    It's a question of depth chart/versatility/usage.

There was no question that Haden would be taking over the LCB starting position.
Ross doesn't play inside/slot/dime. He also doesn't play special teams.

So the depth chart roster question was a simple question of whether you would keep Ross as strictly a backup/insurance policy on Haden. Or whether you are comfortable with Sensabaugh backup up that spot, while also being able to play backup Dime, Slot, Special Teams.

Gay and Hilton are currently the starters at Nickel and Dime, they played nearly all of the snaps at those spots in the final 3 preseason games (Sutton got a handful of reps as well.

Sensabaugh and Cockrell were competing for LCB spot, and the addition of Haden meant one had to go.
Ultimately, Cockrell cost more while being a UFA next year, while Sensabaugh was cheaper and had an additional year (which would be a nice cushion to cut Gay next year).

I was a big supporter of Cockrell, but we made the right move given the many logistical factors.

    Availability is the best ability.

Unlike the majority of the defensive backs, Brian Allen is the only one to participate in not only all Training Camp activities but also all preseason games.

Something like the intangibles he provides athletically was icing on the cake.

For me, he is this years "L.T. Walton". More development will unlock a much better player.
