With JuJu banged up and Coates still not ready I think they keep DHB for sure ...I think they keep Coates on the pup list to start the season ...So I think they will keep 6 and 1 on the pup ..To me that 6th. spot is Hunter,Cobi, or Coates 1 will be released later ..

while I like cobi and definitely think he's in the thick of the wr competition, I have a hard time believing that we can stash any of these receivers on the practice squad without them being snatched (have you seen the jets, browns, rams, 49ers rosters etc.)..... barring being placed on the pup or ir, these guys either make the 53 or they're gone

If they lose a Hamilton I don't think its that big of a deal or Ayers for that matter, they have depth at WR.

I wonder if the FO views Cobi Hamilton in a trade scenario. If he doesn't make the 53 I think he would be snatched off the PS. He has good size and a lot of experience from last year. It would be worth a 6th or 7th instead of potentially losing him. Might as well take advantage of our current surplus.

I liked what I saw from Ayers last year, albeit somewhat limited. I think we'd be losing a lot of potential there.

Rogers can do the same, and he has starting experience.

I guess one issue is that we tend to get a look at receivers like Cobi or Ayers in a way we don't with the 5th or 6th guy on any other team.

So it's not so much about us having a surplus, and more about other teams seeing something in Cobi that they would risk a pick for.

There's a case to be made - he had some clutch catches last year - but would he be identified as a bona fide no.3 or 4 on another team...?

Cobi's been in the league since '14, can he still be put on the PS? I know there are limits, since is designed for developing young players, not to stash 4th yr players. I can't imagine you could get much in trade for him. He'll be 27 in Nov and has a whopping 17 receptions in his career.

I like Cobi, but it is a crowded WR room, if he gets cut I'm sure he'll find another team hurting for a receiver.

I would say its the other way around. I feel Ayers can do what Rogers does but also looks like he could offer more in YAC.

Ive never been overly impressed with Rogers. Don't think its hard to duplicate what he brings to the team.

So we're going to cut Hamilton, Ayers and Coates. Three guys that could start for the Patriots. Shouldn't we have spent the second round pick on a better TE or better CB and keep one of those guys?

What are you basing that claim on?

I'm all for seeing them succeed, but I fail to see how the first two would be considered starters at this point in their careers.

Most teams have 10 or more receivers on their camp rosters, ravens, have 12, bengals 12 cardinals 11,Jags 12, patriots 11, browns 13, just a sampling of the glut of receivers when teams will cut 5 or 6 next month, unlikely any team will trade for a receiver with a 150 or more soon to be on the waiver wire, and like Arians said he hates it but he will have to cut some receivers that can start on other teams.........

Exactly to many college players wanting to play WR...To many college Coaches wanting the ability to go 4 and 5 wide most of the game ..This is y I think the Steelers should look for WR converts ...As I believe you can get better height, weight, speed guys from that group very late in the draft they will have more natural skills to play DB than a lot , but will lack knowledge of the position..

As a former Coach I truly believe a guy with the right mind set can make the switch and develop into 1st. and second round type talent with proper Coaching and development ...It is to late in the career of DHB , but he could have been trained to be a great FS ,I know he went way to early ,but there are guys like him late in the draft now days...Guys with height, weight, and speed playing WR who run poor routes and have questionable hands and like contact ....That is a prime guy for a rangy Safety IMO....

How about a 4th round pick? Lots of position players were available that could be competing for a roster spot, instead of another QB.

No way any of Hamilton, Ayers or Coates is a starter for the Patriots. Maybe Coates could be something if he gets past the injuries and whatever else caused him to be useless the second half of last season, but he's not a starter and certainly not on that team.

I do think drafting a receiver so high was a mistake, but there is some hindsight in that assessment. They didn't know for certain that Bryant would be reinstated and it's tough to count on Coates after the way his 2016 fell apart. The lack of a consistent playmaker at receiver opposite Brown was a huge problem last season and they had to make sure it didn't happen again.

Did you watch the AFCCG and see what NE WRs did to the Steelers secondary?

It was not so much playmaking opposite of Brown.

The lack of a secondary redzone target did us offensively in that game. Heck, going back to the Divisional game, our ability to punch our ticket into the endzone was far worse.

Cannot win a playoff game against the Patriots using just a kicker. Have to have more than that. Besides, we essentially received two first round talents in two rounds. No issues for me.

Do you feel like our Team gets fixated on our draft picks/paid the money to guys,,and they forget how to formulate strong winning plans ? My example would be Wheaton they made him a focal point and every once and awhile he would come up huge , but mostly he was average at best...It does make me stop and wonder if the decoy approach so to speak or the attack this Team like this or attack that Team like that approach tends to escape us from time to time.

Not really trying to Pimp DHB,but when Wheaton was down and DHB was up AB had some monster games ....I look at these things and see the value of a guy who can get behind anybody in the NFL...It's not like he is a great WR but his speed does force Teams to shade his way ...I see this on the tape and I wish the Steelers would use all the tools in the basket each and every game...

Not just a plan A with Wheaton or a plan A with DHB or a plan A with Bryant or a plan a with Bell or a plan A with Rodgers,,but a plan A,B or C with all the weapons and what those weapons bring to the table and how those weapons can be used to make the D they are facing play uncomfortable or out of sorts so to speak ....

I know Wheaton is gone , but would Love to see us utilize our guys in a more Strategic plan of attack on snap to snap quarter to quarter game to game basis...

    O RLY

I agree in part with what you're saying though - I do think some of it is to do with Ben's approach. Sometimes he's great at distributing the ball, but when games get tight, it seems to me that he tends to find "his guy" and go to them all the time. Not holding him entirely responsible, but it plays a part for sure.

It is preseason and the young guns play and try to make the team... This team is blessed to only have to talk about three players like this.. Imagine a team that has 10 camp battles... and then they end their seasons 3-13 .. So let us preseason freaks root for Dobbs, Allen, Hilton... its the season for it now.

Cobi Hamilton is sure making it hard for the Steelers to cut him. But, the way he is playing he shouldn't have much trouble making an NFL roster some where.

If I was the Browns or Bills I pick him up if he didn't make the Steelers. Those teams really need WR's.

Looks like markus wheaton has had nothing but bad luck since signing a 2 year contract with the Bears:

The only luck that Markus Wheaton has had this summer in training camp has been bad.

First, the Bears receiver underwent an emergency appendectomy July 30. And then after sitting out nearly two weeks, Wheaton returned to team drills Sunday and promptly broke his pinkie while trying to catch a pass over the middle.

Is this why you're a "former" coach?

It must amaze you that the NFL is full of so many coaches and players without this "mindset"

If all it took was the "right mindset" to convert WRs into 1st/2nd round Safety talent... every ****ing team in the league would be doing it with 2-3 WRs....
