This would be a good tiebreaker question for the week 1 "Predict the Score" thread!

Because he couldn't beat out a 1st round pick (DHB) and 2nd round pick (Justin Hunter) for a roster spot.

Umhh, I'm missing something. Doesn't he have 2 rings now?

Because it's better than nothing? Apparently they didn't plan to keep him.

To me Coates was a bust since being drafted. I know he had an awesome 3 game stretch last year, then he got hurt & disappeared forever. Hurt or not, he is just a very unimpressive player. His stats suck because he simply can't catch the ball...

I wonder if they really would have cut Coates if they didn't find that trade. Maybe it wasn't simply a matter of DHB over Coates. It was DHB and a 6th-round pick in 2018 over Coates and that 7th-rounder in 2019.

They are trying to win a super bowl. They kept the better player, a late rounder didn't change their mind.

Thank you for the research, I was just thinking about this myself. Please don't just lump KC though.
Coach Cliche has a LOT to do with it also. As Steel Elvis said Jarvis Jones , KC & MT usually
hit on the ones & two's, if this changes they will not be employed to long in their profession.

    2 + 1 this year + 1 next year = 4

    Total optimism on my part.

For all the Coates versus Hunter comments. Think about it like this. I doubt our 5th wideout gets a helmet on game day, whereas our 6th wr will because of ST

Pretty much. Our track record in Round is amongst the best in the league. We have also found GEMS late in the draft. Most teams depend on FA. Up until this year we never really had to because we had been so successful.

People sometimes forget that when you have a really great team, like the Steelers, it's tough for most of the draft picks to come in and make an impact.

Our secondary would be the exception.

People forget that Sammie also had a hard time at Auburn making the routine catch.

He will be an alright player if he keeps working, will make boatloads of money and retire comfortably.

DHB isn't the captain of Special teams nor has he ever been!

Coates was never any good. Even the worst NFL player can have a few good games over the course of a career. Coates is a very good athlete but not good at football. There is a difference.

This was a move I was glad to see happen. Trade Coates and a low 7th for a high 6th (hopefully). Better than cutting him for nothing.

The beginning of last season was great for him. But I do wonder how many of those fly patterns would have been executed with Bryant in the lineup. Hand injuries will leave us all wondering what could have been, but my money is on him being an average receiver on a terrible team and being irrelevant in 3 years.

As Van Halen once said, "Only time will tell if [Sammie Coates) stands the test of time."

As bad as our secondary have traditionally been, I'm very confident Sammy Coates will not hurt us in the future as long as he's playing for the Browns with a rookie QB. I'm more worried about DeMarcus Ayers than Coates because he's bitter & may have Brady throwing to him...
