since this is my 1000, i usually don't worry about that stuff but, i wanted to do one on carnell.

how lucky are we for picking him up as a coach? carnell is a class act, and one smart guy,not to mention one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. i've met him a few times when dwight (stoney) was here as i do know him and shawn vincent when he was here. i truely believe he made a difference in our DB's last year. i was looking at some of the safeties that are in this years draft. tony dye was interesting. (i wouldn't mind these two hooking up here again), but he was playing great and then kind of took a step back his sr. year. i got to thinking that's when carnell left there. he would have been his coach when the kid was playing his best. anyway the thought of letting carnell mold this young bunch is pretty exciting and i can't wait to see what he will do with them this season.

i feel better about when DLB finally decides to retire ( i'm in no hurry for that by the way). with carnell here and keith butler here, we could have a very potentialy great coaching staff heading this defense for many more years and maybe more.

Happy 1000 Mac. Carnell is proving to be a tremendous addition, and the improvement of the DB unit over the past year is promising.

You know Dwight Stone? That's pretty cool. I wouldn't mind hearing more about that.

my dad has had 4 season tics for years. friends of theirs all uased to go together with us to games and we met stoney, during the strike shortened season. he then would come out and talk to us after the games and they became friends with him and my wife and i. he used to get us inside the building after the game just outside the lockeroom. we would usually go out and eat with him and his then girlfriend after the games at the speghetti warehouse. his mom had never seen him play for years after he turned pro, so he flew his mom and sister up here and my dad and step mom picked them up at the airport and took them home with them. they all had dinner at my dads and then we took them to the game with us.

he then met his wife jenny and they all became freinds. they even went to the wedding and still exchange Christmas presents every year. i think dwights in north or south carolina now. he became a cop and he goes around to HS and gives talks to kids. super nice guy and genuine. we met carnell threw him and tunch and woodson. i know shawn vincent well and see him alot. he was only here one year. his nephew played HS football with my oldest son and he works for another freind of ours.

i also know timmy spencer, lance mehl, bobby lyons, ben taylor, and some even older nfl players. george neff and dick chorovitch. both of them are deceased. i used to eat breakfast with george every morning. he played for ohio state and then played for the detroit lions in the 40's. lance of course played for the jets when they were the NY sack exchange. his son and my son played HS football together. spence , went to ohio state and to the usfl and then on to the SD chargers. he then coached RB's at OSU and now for lovie in chicago. we played HS ball together. dick C. played for the colts. lyon and taylor for the browns. my cousin coached ben in HS. bobby L and i worked together when he was home from school in the summer.

Our corners were light years better last season. Lake had to have a big hand in that improvement. I wonder how much of Gay's improvement was due to Lake's coaching. Even with Gay gone (just when he started to show good value), I am feeling pretty good about our corner situation next year. That said, I still wouldn't mind another one on the draft.

Wow, Mac. That's some great stuff...thanks for sharing. I'm a little stunned by your Steelers/NFL friends and acquaintances. (and jealous) :)

I'm more envious of the season tickets though. :p :-D

Love Carnell Lake! He was a huge upgrade over Ray Horton as the DBs coach.

Everybody thinks it's a forgone conclusion that Keith Butler is our next DC, but I wouldn't count out Carnell Lake. He was always one of our most intelligent payers and that's carried over into coaching. I think he's got a legitimate shot to succeed Dick Lebeau.

What you say is possible, but I highly doubt it. I would be willing to bet the only reason Keith Butler is still in the Burgh this year is they basically guaranteed him the job in order to keep him from leaving.

He learned from some of the best, in the best organization on the planet.
He will make a difference in our DB play. Now if we could get dick Lebeau gone
we can get on with getting back to attacking football play.We have to get Db's that can play man to man. And we have to be able to get pressure on the passer. The playoff caliber teams
    has this defense figured out.

I too think Lake was a great player and appears to be a great coach. I wouldn't anoint him DL's replacement just yet, though.

Loved it when I first heard he was hired as the DB coach....and still love it. I thought our DB's played at a lot higher level this past season. Hell even Gay had his moments! ;-)

We should consider ourselves lucky to have him imo. :clapping:

the team must feel the same way. they have only left him with one vet. they must feel very comfortable with what he has shown them, and what he has done with the young players. to cut two vets and leave these guys and most likely another draft pick this year, they expect these guys to play at a high level, and carnell must have shown them they will be ready. :applaud:

Great player. Jury is still out on evaluating him as a coach.

Me too, excellent hire. He was a great player and is proving to be a great coach too. Looking forward to see how our secondary does in year 2 under his tutelage. :clapping:

Ike Taylor played the best ball of his career and William Gay played at an average NFL level for much of the season, which is like a 300% improvement from years past. That improvement coming in his fifth year. Could definitely be a coincidence, and maybe it is too soon to say anything for sure, but you can't deny he's off to a great start.
