Bouchette reporter after we signed Gradkowski that the Steelers "really wanted" Hoyer, and that Bruce was their 2nd choice. Do you think we're content with Gradkowski and Jones now? Or do they try to make room to get Hoyer in camp too and let him and Grad battle it out? I think Landry Jones is safe as our #3, just because his ceiling is probably higher than either of those other 2 guys and we won't want to risk him getting grabbed before making it to the PS.

Release John Parker Wilson, sign Hoyer and let him battle it out with Grad for #2. Grad has more experience starting then Hoyer but he's in his low 30's too I think.

I'd be for this is the money is right. I don't know what we gave Gradkowski guaranteed... I also wonder about hoyer on waivers. The Cards tendered him at something like 2-3 mil, so if we claimed him is that what we'd pay him? If so, too much for sure... But we could wait until he clears.

Gradkowski's deal included $850,000 guaranteed. Hoyer may get claimed on waivers, but definitely not by us. Whoever claims him will be on the hook for his $2,023,000.00 salary (2nd round tender).

Ok, that's what I was wondering. I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay that much for him. If he clears though and can be had cheap? Then maybe.

I guess it just depends on if they really liked him as much as Bouchette made it sound.

Being ignorant, but how can Hoyer be getting paid that much - we didn't pay him that, did we? Confused.

    However.

I am fairly happy with Gradkowski as a back up. No idea what Jones will be like until training camp...

we are not bringing hoyer back..... besides, what would we want with a qb that got cut from a qb starved team

The Cards tendered him high to pretty much discourage teams from trying to sign him as an RFA...as at the time they had squat at QB. Now they have Palmer/etc...they do not need him apparently.

Anyways...if he goes unclaimed (as I would not want to pay him over 2mil) then sure bring him in and let him compete with Bruce...the winner gets the #2 spot and Jones the #3

Then he's free to sign with whichever team for however much they offer.

I agree. You'd have to think that his hype has dulled some after being waived 3 times now since preseason. If he came cheap, I say bring the man in. I don't care who's already in camp. Competition is competition. Odds are that he'll get picked up by someone as a reliable #2, for more than we can afford to pay him.

Not even close...we paid him the minimum. The Cards were thinking he'd be in higher demand than he was.

Thats what I think too. Maybe the Cards are doing what the Steelers did with him, making some room with the hopes of bringing him back. Except with us, we didn't have that tender on him so made it easy for anyone to pick him up.

The Steelers wanted this "scrub" which is why the OP made the thread. He's probably on the same talent level as Grad with more upside and younger so if they can get him for nothing then why not bring him in to compete for the #2. Eventually Jones will supplement either of them but why not have a young stable of back ups if he can be had.

far too many people on this site equate youth with talent and upside. the truth is, if hoyer had any true upside, then he wouldn't be searching for a team.. the only time anyone has heard hoyer's name called is during the times that he's been unemployed.......... yes, we need youth, but we also need youth "and" talent... let's not keep pimping the young just because they're young

Updating this...Hoyer is a vested veteran, therefore not subject to waivers. He can sign with any team right now.

With the drafting of Landry Jones, I think this is a dead issue. They aren't gonna carry more than 3 QBs so Hoyer will have to search elsewhere.

Doesn't automatically mean they don't have any either and we are talking about going up against Grad, whom I like but is hardly the second coming of Aaron Rodgers. Lets not forget, the Steelers were really hoping to pick him back up, they only let him go for a roster spot. We're talking about a back up roll, not starter.

I don't think we'll bite, but if we can get him at his vet min number of 715k, I think he's worth a shot. You want to have a bunch of QBs heading into camp, and if you grab Hoyer and cut JP Wilson, you only get a net 45k cap impact (Wilson makes 630k).

I must be having a blonde moment. How can a player still be an RFA if he's got 4 years in the league? RFA's are players with 3 years...like Sanders this year and without a new deal after this (his 4th year) he will be a UFA. So how was Hoyer an RFA with having 4 seasons in the league already? Is there some clause I don't know about? I'm not trying to argue with you or anything...I'm just curious...and as i said i could be having a blonde moment here (they sometimes happen, haha).

    This is true.

I'm not going to be harsh on Hoyer, I just haven't seen him play enough - or at all, come to think of it - to base anything on. Does he offer anything more than JP Wilson? The reason I'm happy with Gradkowski is that I want a seasoned vet who's seen it before to step in mid-game if Ben goes down. This was clearly the philosophy with Batch and Leftwich. We have Jones to groom (if that's the plan), so age isn't such a big sell for me with Hoyer.
