Butler was demoted now it looks like they are doing the same to Canada. It’s how they operate. Always with the cutesy stuff like Arians and LeBeau “retired”.

Was Ray Sherman the last assistant coach that was fired during the year?

I wasn't referring to zone blocking/man blocking. I was referring to situational play calling.

All that tells me is that the zone blocking scheme doesn't work. Either the players can't make the right decisions, or the scheme itself is bad.

So scrap it. Go with what does work.

I saw very little difference in the play calling, just different results.

Zone blocking works, the players couldn't execute it.

And that is exactly what they did.

We have power run blockers on the OL aside from Chuks. Should play to our strengths.

    I mean..

How about being down there, on the field, with your Personnel?! I know, such a wild suggestion but, is it that hard?! Hell, look at the Texans Offensive Coordinator Bobby Slowik. He is on the field with his unit!

Why isn't Canada?! Hell, as much grief as many of us gave Fichtner, at least he was on the field with his group!

    Agreed.

Canada is not out of the woods yet. Have quite a bit of atonement to do.

There are drawbacks to both and boils down to personal preference. Some people think they get a better feel for the ebb and flow of the game on the sideline, but they can’t see what happens during the play as well. Up in the box you can see what’s happening, but don’t have as much feel.

    Fair point.

However, given the fact that the Steelers have an Offensive Assistant, why not have one work from the booth and one work on the field?! Would the logistics of that be that horrible?! Only way I see it being horrible is if both Thomas and Canada are not working together; something that should not happen but wouldn't surprise me.

you have to get the line right. cole has been a sore spot. okrafor has been a sore spot.

there are different types of zone blocking. inside zone and outside zone. i watched miami vs NE last week. miami runs mostly outside zone blocking but against NE they would throw in some inside zone that wasn't their staple and it worked very well when they used it. they were able to run both when needed.

zone blocking is like dancing with the stars. footwork, double teams and then a guy coming off the double team block to move to the next level. mostly depending on one player reading where the defender lines up on him. so it's a read style of blocking, but the guy next to you has to read the same thing. if the footwork is off or just one player reads it wrong it can fail per play. if one guy is beat it can fail across the board because each has an assignment and there is no cover for a failed block.

similar to our WR's having to read the defender and alter the route to them and then kenny having to read it the same. that has been failing as of late. so have the blocking assignments.

there is so much more to a play call than what most assume. it's not like HS where this player blocks here or the receiver run to here. much of an nfl offense is read off the defender. more than one guy has to read the same thing. this isn't just a canada thing.

i watched witherspoon last night play pretty well. here everyone just said he stinks. for the rams he plays well. whats the difference? our staff trying to make players with different skill sets be a one size fits all possibly? does our staff run more of a square peg in a round hole type of flavor? we bring in some names in free agency but do they match up with what the scheme is and do they match with the others around them?

dick lebeau used to complain about this. the heads bringing in zone defenders and them wanting him to run more man. sure he was a zone blitz guy but when he went to tenn. he ran more man than any other team with success. they had the players to do it. it's not always about the play called, it's about the personnel to run the play called and those players able to and on the same page with the play called. there is more than meets the eye going on. OK rant over. sorry about the book.

you are grasping at straws with that one.
If I remember correctly that wasn’t exactly the way it worked out either. They let Porter go and then butler resumed coaching the linebackers

/edit he also remained the Steelers DC for two more seasons after adding the additional title of linebackers coach

    Because he was under contract.

Canada will be let go after his contract is up, too.

So being the offensive coordinator the most important player is your QB. So now Jet Sweep want to spend more time with Pickett? You can't make it up folks. He should be working on having Pickett audible when you call a dumb play and stop being so predictable. Maybe come down on the sidelines.

The only plausible explanation I have heard so far that would dispute him having OC duties taken away is that Sullivan is responsible for Pickett regressing.

Otherwise, you don’t give OC’s and DC’s MORE work. FFS people use some common sense. And look to history for guidance.
