Wrong all the pundits already predicting special packages it's the natural evolution of the game. I will also add that the Commish wants Teams to go for 2 and I bet he moves it up to the 1 or 1.5 yard line next year. So get ready to see all the HS packages as they are coming . Not a matter of if but when.....

Of course Teams worry they might lose a guy esp. at a position with aging Vets and little talent . ie Safety . No Coach wants to lose any young potential talent period .So yes they put Hundreds of hours in ,deciding about those last 3 or 4 guys on the 53 as well as hundreds of hours on who to put on the practice squad. I bet the staff talks about it 3 or 4 hours every day , and all day long on players days off....

That is different from what you were talking about, finalizing the final roster is brutal and there is alwaying going to be moments of shoulda woulda coulda. What I took from your post is that you feel they are going to be kicking themselves for cutting a guy like Boyd because some team picks him up and uses him as a sub package QB in 2pt situations. I just don't see that happening. I'm sure Mitchell didn't like Maruo getting snatched from the PS last season but what are you going to do that is the game and I doubt the dwell on it.

Again to the natural evolution of the game, I am sure the Commish is pushing it for the wow factor and I'm sure at somepoint it will become a bigger aspect of the game. However I just don't see teams doing it this season no matter what the talking heads say. Look at the time the 2pt conversion has been part of the pro game and how much of an impact has it made? Just because the rules on extra points have made it more difficult doesn't necessarily mean that coaches will start gambling more. There will be an increase but not to the point teams need to begin thinking about gadget plays and sub packages for it.

I think the issue is LJ taking up a roster spot when you will potentially lose someone like Ian Wild, Dangerfield, Howard Jones, Ventrone, Darby, or Goodwin. Like you said he won't never see the field but these after mentioned guys could be better off on special teams at least

Now that part of it I do agree with. He's never going to be a factor, so there's no sense wasting the roster spot.

I'm thinking LJ is OK this week. The TD he put up in the 4th qtr. covered the 3 points the Steelers were giving the Packers. Works for me.

I think we should just convert DHB to a 2 point specialist QB and kill 2 birds with one stone.

DHB can't throw so I would say no. DGB is also not Strong enough to run the Power Zone Read stuff ...I would however consider playing him at Safety he makes some nice hits on ST'S and it is clear he has the speed .

i think while we have 4-5 years left with ben, we could start a fuzz lower and maybe just hit a home run with someone. ya never know. i think that was some of the thinking with LJ. we needed to get younger but we could afford to take a chance on a kid that threw for so many yards in college and see where it went. i'd at least be looking prior to ben departing. i don't think that guy is landry but by then he could at least be grad. the next draft pick could be an upgrade from either of them in the next 4-5 years. i just would like to start looking before bens final season, to see if we can get a hit possibly.

The Panthers are stacked at QB if they cut Joe Webb I would be all over it . I would even try to trade for him . The Panthers need another WR and Phillips has looked fairly good on tape they may take a straight up trade . He looks like a future #2 for sure and might even be starter material .

LJ had a good game, 172 yards 2 TDs and 1 pick, he is improving each week, and the experience he is getting shows up better each week, the coaching staff is committed to him and Ben is working with him, he will be the 2 before you know it, thats the plan...

The basic motivation of my original post, was that Landry Jones was drafted in the 4th round

I changed my mind about Landry Jones, he has shown some improvement this preseason more pocket awareness he even ran the ball a few times when no one was open. At least this preseason he earned his spot on the 53, I'm okay with him being on the team. I still don't think he's Ben's heir apparent but he looks much better, and his receivers have dropped a lot of passes which haven't helped.

He's also missed a few receivers that are hard to miss like Bryant. Nothing ticks me off more than not at least giving a guy his size a chance on the ball.

I'm trying to figure you out PWP. I know you know football but you seem to hitch your wagon to some players with questionable abilities to really contribute like DHB, Redman, Legs and seem to be convinced that the NFL is going to turn into a peewee league with double wing T's, 5 wide empty backfield jet sweeps every down, QB run option, etc. are you by chance a high school or pop warner coach?

I was a High School Coach . I never said that the NFL would go HS ball on every play , but it is going to go that way on 2 point conversions period.Redman played very well until he got hurt he came back and was not the same, I hitched my wagon to him because he refused to go down ,probably why he got hurt.On to the next guy. DHB has world class speed and never played HS ball only 1 year , so again he is not a finished product yet, will be a bargain as a 4th. or 5th. WR for the Team for years to come.

Big Doug played Center just as good as Pouncey. On tape he held up a lot better than Pouncey against the big NT'S. Go back and watch the film. Watch Pouncey vs. Ngata then watch Big Doug against him. Also go back and look at Steelers Depot Big Doug graded out very high almost every game he played .

To answer your question point blank. Anyone can hitch a wagon to a all world player, just because they have all the skills doesn't make them a great player. The guys I like to root for our guys that are not the best Athletes , but they do have skills and tremendous Heart. If the world class players Loved Football as much as the guys I hitch my wagon to then they would look the part, sadly many of those squander that talent....

As a former Coach I can't stand Players not playing to their potential . Give me a Football Player every day of the week . Make no mistake the guys above are real Football Players they play for the Love of the game . Don't believe me listen to Coach T he has said the same thing about each and every guy some more than once .. Those type guys push the skill players you get a Team full of skill players with no true heart and I will show you a losing Team........

The light has come on for him. He has always had a strong arm he has always been able to run . Now he is making the right reads throwing nice passes and leading his Team back for wins . He has completion rate this year of like 65% throwing to scrubs mostly ..He has a QB rating of like 105. Simply put he is just better than Landry Jones .

OK fair enough, I appreciate your response. I'm probably not on the same page when it comes to DHB or Red but c'est la vie. I was a big fan of Legs and thought he did a damned good job starting at C when Pouncey went down. I'm wondering if he is that same player now a few years and injuries later. I guess we'll find out soon enough. I'm of the opinion that Wallace is the guy until someone else like Legs can earn the nod. If he does, great! I understand what you are saying about mobile pulling G's and agree but why can't we have mobile G's that can pull AND have a mobile C who can get to the second level and block downfield? Seems like a strength for Pouncey at C.

Scheme wise it is harder to have a pulling Center. When I coached if a Team had mobile guards we would attack the A gaps right over the Center. Teams would also do that to us . On all the tapes I watched it was very common . So the best balance is Big,Quick,Big,Quick,Big . The 3 big guys allow those Athletes to get out into space, basically provides them the room to pivot out and pull, if the Bigs gets crushed all pull plays are over if you have a smaller center those plays are over.

That's why I like a Stronger Bigger Center . Scheme wise if you want a pulling Center it is best to go Big and strong at the Guards and Athletic at the Tackles, that's more the zone read line .
