I agree with Cam. If I was on the NFLPA this would be a centerpiece of negotiations when talking about an 18 game season.

Hey Heyward, players voted for it. Talk to them.

    Most players don’t get tagged

    Therefore most players don’t care

Therefore if the owners want it they will get it

    It is really that simple

And yet one or more will claim otherwise because they know more than the Steelers

Not every player on the last year of their rookie contract gets offered an extension

Sometimes it’s best to wait and see

Perhaps that is the situation here

This...it's like if the price of Bugatti's went up. Most of us wouldn't give a ****....I'm pretty confident that this would impact 0% of us...but you never know.

But for the players who are good enough, the tag is a huge deal.

Because even if they don't tag you, the threat looms. And it means that you basically never get a UFA type price in the first two years of an extension. Because you're always hampered by the fact that the team could tag you twice.

But it would be terrible for the union to remove the tag. Because if they did, even more of the money would go to the top 10% of the league and the bottom 90% of players would get less.

And since the union is supposed to be 1 member 1 vote, then the union would be stupid to spend capital on something that's only going to help the richest players. Especially because doing so literally takes money out of the pockets of the vast majority.

Same reason the owners are going to win a labor dispute every time. Most players have ~ 2 years in the league to make about what the median US income earner makes in a 30 year career (pretax anyway). That guy isn't going to sacrifice one of his 2 years of massive earnings potential so that some high end QB doesn't have to worry about being franchise tagged.
