Some team might be able to trade up for that number one pick? Not likely but John Elway wouldn't sign with the first team to draft him and he got his way. I wonder what the reaction would be for some kid to say if I'm not drafted by such and such a team I'm not signing and will stay in school? I look for the draft at some point to be found unconstitutional. That would be interesting

Eli, and papa kinda did the same with the Chargers. I think it's a bad thing for a player to do this. 1. You still get paid.
    2. If You are all You say You are .....You should be able to help turn any team around. Because You as a Qb are the key component.
    3. If it doesn't workout....You can always be traded, or leave after the rookie contract.

I believe the rookie contract eats up 5 years of your career. He might not be willing to wait that long

Well I watched Burrow go to a team that hadn't won a playoff game since 1990 till Burrow came in. That's over 30 years, and He took them to a SB His 1st healthy year. Many Many people told Him not to go to the Bengals, but He believed He was good enough to change things. I guess C. Williams doesn't.

Nailed it! Honestly, Eli Manning left a bad taste in my mouth the year he was drafted by pulling that crap with the help of daddy. I like players who just appreciate the fact that an organization thinks so much of them that they’re willing to make them the number one overall pick and the face of their franchise.

Unless it’s the Browns then all bets are off! :bscow:

I'm not taking one side or the other here. I just gave you some reasons he might be thinking of this.

I'm not either. I'm just stating how much I don't like it. They should be honored to just be drafted.

I kind of agree, but look what happened to David Carr, he was pummeled into oblivion. I get that everyone has to take that chance, but some owners and organizations are literal career enders. It's basically Willaims betting on himself, that his status or elite ability will force the change, or he makes the decision to not enter in time to return and still get paid NIL and hope he stays healthy. I honestly have no issue with the latter, as it is his choice to enter early or not.

We will have to disagree. I have never thought Carr was anything better than average. People can say what they want, but He has had weapons, and D, and He has been average. Hell last Year He had the number 1 Rushing RB, and the top Wr in the league, and still couldn't do anything. Now He is in the weakest division in the NFL....what will be His excuse now???

Different Carr, David was his brother, drafted by Houston, and was sacked 249 times in 5 years. 76 the first year.

The thing is, this really never needed to come out publicly. He could have easily said that he may stay in school to get his degree. Let people speculate all they want. Regardless, it doesn't really bother me either way and quite frankly, it would be kind of funny to watch a team tank for him only to have him stay in school.

Not the same now. They don't get the mega bucks initial contracts they used to get. Plus they have the NIL now as well. He can rake in those dollars for one more year.

I never understood why Baseball players can enter the draft year after year and still be able to go back to school, while football players can't return to school if they declare themselves eligible for the draft.

On one hand, he's not wrong.
On the other, you're gambling with a crap ton of money. A severe enough injury can ruin his career. Poor enough performance in the extra year can knock him out of the first round altogether. Not to mention, the obvious already stated...each year is the same...the worst team gets 1st crack at him.

    A) It was the father who said this, not Caleb. When asked about it, he said "the only thing I'm worried about is our game on Saturday."
    B) with NFTs, he could make more in college next year than he would in the NFL.

Isn't he obligated to pay a percentage to the NIL once drafted?

He is getting about 3 million a year. His 1st contract in the NFL will be about 43 million. F*ck around, and get seriously hurt, and You can say bye bye to that.

The team with the 1st overall pick doesn’t have to use it. That pick can be traded for a treasure trove of players and/or picks. Hypothetically, any of 32 teams could be in play depending on how bad they wanted Caleb Williams. That declaration is pointless 6-7mos before the next draft.

Good question. I'm sure it's NFL rules vs MLB rules. NBA seems to be more along the lines of the NFL. It's something that never made sense to me and shows how inefficient the NCAA as a governing body

Yes and it seems like Arizona may potentially have the top two slots. Very sure teams would be looking to make a move with the Cards getting a slew of picks and still in the top 3. Who knows how that'll shape out
