I say scheme in his scheme the cb's start off in a losing position i.e. big ass cushions lb's covering receiver's and why never an adjustment to te's and rb's out of the back field.

Lack of talent, IMO. Shazier, Tuitt, Heyward and Mitchell are overrated. Dupree isn't doing us a damn bit of good right now... and Jones won't be back.

We simply don't have the talent ..We don't have the guys up front to get pressure without help and we don't have the guys to cover without help ....To complicate the problem the guys playing in the Safety spots take poor angles and choose to cover the wrong guys...Why in the hell would the Safety slide to the opposite side of Dez ? Why would they take flat angles on a screen pass ? We need at least 5 starters on Defense ..

Especially when the big TD to Bryant came on press man coverage by a rookie. Yep, cushions

I saw that too. You have Burns on Bryant and Sean Davis chooses to go help out Cockrell??? Mind boggling at times.

Coaching. Undisciplined play over long periods of time points directly at the HC. Consistent Mental errors means your players aren't prepared.

People hated the fact that DL would keep players on the bench (especially young guys) because they weren't mentally prepared. DL had that expectation on his players that you better know the defense or you won't play. In DL's last years he was dealing with aging vets and lack of depth. That's on the FO and MT but DL was fired for it. They fired DL and now the high expectations are gone and it shows on the field.

The team has been sloppy for 6 years straight. At times we lacked talent here and there ....but the constant theme has been sloppy play and sloppy coaching. Losing to teams like the Ravens and Dolphins like we did , then showing the ability to beat the one of the best teams in football means the players are good enough, the preparation and game management is not.

Why are we considerably worse this year than last year? I don't understand it?

Only major differences are no Will Allen, and no Blake (who did have some timely turnovers)?

Is Dupree going to make that much of a difference? He made some plays, but he is no Von Miller...

Our DB'S simply have poor Football IQ , we need guys who know when to do what..We simply don't have any instinct at the position.

McClendon was better than Hargrave in the base. Don't know if that matters or not.

Agree on wrong angles but scheme is also a problem. When the Cowboys were down to last plays and everyone knew they were going to run cause all they needed was a field goal. They have Mitchell way over near the side helping out Davis on Bryant and you have Golden on the other side, you have JJ on the field who is getting killed on the run plays. Don't know why Mitchell is double up on Bryant on a run play, but Mitchell, Golden, Davis and all took horrible angles, JJ gets blown out, Shazier gets knocked down and you have a runner going untouched for the winning score. Our safteies, linebackers, don't have the smarts, coaching or talent.

I'll tell you what. Either we went all xtra points and were up by 5 forcing a fg in which I think we win or we don't do the fake spike but score killing the clock. Either way this team finds ways to lose, hence why we are not good

I think Cockrell has great instincts.

DL kept the young players on the bench because he had veteran players ahead of them on the depth chart. DL system was also difficult for the young players to learn, Polamalu didn't start as a rookie.

    See, that's the difference between a big-ass cushion and a big ass-cushion.

I am going with scheme. Is talent lacking....maybe...but other teams around the league seem to somehow manage to win football games without a pro bowler at ever level and needing their offense to score 36 points a game.

That defense against the Cowboys made me miss the defense of the first part of the year.....sure they didn't stop the other team from scoring...but at least they slowed them down. They looked like a bull fighter with a cape getting out of the way of Zeke.

Remember the old make them one dimensional game plan...Zeke had over 200 yards...and Dak had over 300.....thats a lot of yards from 2 rookies.

To be fair, Elliott had 114 rushing yards (including that spirit-crushing 32-yarder at the end).

Mitchell has always taken bad angles going back to his Oakland days.

Agreed. Only now are we staring to realize how lucky we got with a front of Kiesel, Big Snack and Smith, and Ike and Troy in the back. The linebackers looked good thanks to the front 3, and the other cornerback was covered by Troy and Ike, and big hitting Ryan Clark didn't hurt.

Wanted to add, Mitchell is on par with Clark, but doesn't have the DB help like Clark had.

It is scheme AND talent AND lack of smarts. The D often seems confused about who to cover, and then can't recover. QBs often seem to have wide open folks to throw to, and then someone (hopefully) runs up to tackle. Ben often is throwing into double coverage or a very small window. Not sure why we can't do that. Either the defensive plan is dumb or the execution of the plan is poor, or both. One points to poor practices or lack of talent on the player's part. The other points to lack of talent on Butler's part.

I want to know what Butler says to himself after some of those breakdowns:

&^%$*#@ what were those guys doing? That's not how that was supposed to work - not what we did in practice. They are idiots!!!

    or

Whoops - looks like that scheme doesn't work.
