    Yeah, I don't get it.

This! How about punishing these guys who dramatically change the outcome of the game during the game.

He wasn't charged, so the justice system wasn't the problem. That disgrace you're referring to is the media.

I wonder what it will take for police to go out there and arrest a player for actions outside the "game". Just wondering is all. At what point does the authorities get involved whether it's in a game or not?

Hypothetically, if Burfict were to pull out a knife and stab an opposing player on the field, he would be arrested right then and there.

At what point does a player cross the line to warrant an arrest? I do not believe a precedent has been set for that but Burfict must be getting close.

Same principle of police shootings: who would want to be a cop if you go to jail for defending yourself in a shooting? This is already happening. I'm sure it will be harder and harder to recruit.

Why play football? Risk of head trauma, debilitating joint injuries, and now you can go to jail for hitting too hard.

Frankly some of the comments here are getting out of hand.

A 3 game suspension is huge.

Yes. He'll lose those game checks. But I think a fine on top of that is appropriate.

I guess I wasn't clear. I wasn't suggesting anyone go to jail for hitting too hard. I love watching some hard nosed football. Just wondering at what point does someone's behavior become so extreme to be deemed "outside the game" and warrant criminal charges.

It would be the injury and not the action. If an illegal act like stomping resulted in a player's ability to earn a living then a lawsuit may be merited.

Steve Moore settled with Beetuzzi for having his neck broken by a sucker punch. If there was no injury it would have been a game misconduct for Bertuzzi and probably a small fine.

If Maxx Williams was unable to play football any longer as a result of Burfict's hit he could sue.

No one is going to jail for anything on a football field but there could be lawsuits.

Not to be pedantic, but ... it's the action and not the injury (per se) that determines whether the actor could be sued. The injury factors into: (a) whether there is "legal injury" sufficient to permit a legal action (a bar set very low); and (b) the damage award. It's trespassing, regardless of whether I take one step in your pretty flower garden or spend the day Goldilocks-ing inside your house. But the "injury" is trivial in the first instance, so the case wouldn't stick. (Generally speaking, of course.)

I disagree. There have been multiple fights in the NFL.

Andre Johnson beat Cortland Finnegan's ass.

That is assault if it happens on the street.

"It's just a part of football" though.

If Finnegan had broken a vertebrae in his neck/visually impaired etc. and been out of the NFL then he could have sued.

The action has to be out of the norm for what is acceptable in the NFL but the norm is already violence. Fights happen every week in some game.

And I feel that any legal action would be civil rather than criminal.

Clive, are you saying that Andre Johnson shpuld have had assault charges filed? It doesn't matter that Finnegan was not hurt?

"According to criminal defense attorney Bobby G. Frederick, assault and battery charges are divided into three separate categories: third degree, second degree and first degree. The difference in all three is the DEGREE to which one person invades the personal space, or injures, another person."

Regarding assaults the injury is everything. There, now you don't have to be pedantic, Clive. ;)

That's criminal assault, not civil assault.

Big hits are part of the game and a known risk taken by players. Illegal hits are a lesser part of the game, but they're known to occur, and that risk too is assumed by the players when they take the field. Suppose I dipped my taped-up hands in tar, rolled them broken glass, then took the field and came at you. THAT would be actionable, as it's clearly not part of the game and beyond the risk reasonably foreseen and assumed by you, the player. You could sue me regardless of whether your injury was a small cut on your ass or a horrific disfiguring of your face.

Yes, if a player was to go full Tong Po from Kickboxer that would be assault.

    Very good, Clive. You're right.
