Straight from the horse’s mouth Jones doesn’t care if he plays right or left.

    2:58 mark

They had first string intact with Herbig at center.

Second string was Jones at LT, Troy at RT, and Frazier at C.

It is just a matter of time before these guys move up accordingly to replace the vets, assuming they are as ready as advertised, and everyone stays healthy.

I know I'm in the minority but I actually think the Steelers should keep Jones at RT and play Fautanu at Left tackle

    He made three statements.
Two of them were what we in the real world call "facts". The first team line that practiced and the second team line that practiced are indeed facts.
The one assumption he made was that "It's just a matter of time before these guys move up accordingly to replace the vets", which he then qualified with the phrase "assuming that..."
So no, not a lot of assumptions. Just that everyone remains healthy and that they are as advertised.

Jones has the prototypical size for a LT, Fautanu not so much.

Fautanu basically said the same thing, except that he upped the ante and said that he was comfortable playing anywhere on the line

What's confusing is the way they frame the camera makes him look smaller than Moore. I was confused for a second!

I guess I will leave that to the coaches, assuming the can see and know the best combo for these 2.

very excited to see this new look OLINE.

some said Dan Moore would still be our starting LT week 1 - I highly doubt that will be case.

moving these guys to get reps at different spots is a good thing. all it can do is make them all better and more comfortable at any spot they practice at.

jones is 1 inch taller and has an arm length 1/4 of an inch longer. not sure that is much of a difference.

Well let's just see How it all plays out....I know this....they are not going to start a 4th round pick Moore over two 1st round picks....unless He's outplayed then in camp.

Players generally need to prove themselves regardless of where they were drafted. Don't just hand rookies the job. Make them work to prove themselves. The work needs to happen on and off the field.

Moore isn't the most talented player but he knows how to succeed in "the pro game". Moore knows the playbook, how the opposition might attack, Olinen adjustments, his blocking assignments, ect ect ect.

Moore picked up and learned the playbook quickly as a rookie. Moore has 3 years starting experience. Go out there and beat him rook.

When it's all said and done Jones will be the LT, and Fautanu will be the RT.

probably but the prototypical size isn't the reason as you said. the size difference is minimal.

There's a reason you don't see many starting LT under 6'5

didn't you say that Dan Moore was going to be our starting LT, just after the draft? It may have been someone else......

    Agreed.

Arm Length threshold is more important than height when discussing Offensive Tackles. Players like Joe Alt have both with superb technique to boot; him being a Top 5 talent not a surprise. Troy's overall technique and discipline are fine; will be better with refinement. His Length was a massive question mark heading into the NFL Scouting Combine.

Once that question was answered, Fantanu's draft stock was set. The whole "knee issue" was nothing more than a fabrication; the usual with draft season for many top flight prospects. If there was a question with Troy Fautanu, it is about schematic fit. Dude is a mauler in a Zone style rushing attack.

    Troy will be fine

I still think Fautanu is the better LT because he is a better pass blocker and had a higher Athleticism Score (Better Better Split, Vertical Jump, and Broad Jump) In other words, he gets back on Pass Defense better . Jones is the Better run blocker for the RT position.

the average height of an nfl left tackle is 6-5 and 3/4 of an inch, which puts jones under the prototypical height. the 1/4 of an inch arm length that TF has is very minimal compared to jones. the 1 inch in height also is minimal with TF having better movement skills. the sum of the total package has to be taken into the equation. both have skills and enough length to man the LT spot.
