You just wouldn't release a cornerback playing well if you only had to pay him $2.5 million. Then again, the Miami Dolphins aren't a bastion of good personnel decision making.

They do have a habit of bringing back corners they released before, McFadden and Gay are two examples of their strange decisions, so, it wouldn't be surprising if they signed another former cast off again, they are after all bottom feeders when it comes to our pitiful secondary.....

Can we just trade them Blake straight up?

As they should be. I saw and heard from Dolphins fans he started the season really good. I wonder if it was injuries. Either way if they can get him for cheap, he already knows the defense. I wouldn't want this to be the only FA db signing but I'd take the experienced depth.

Absolutely. He would be nothing more than a back up here anyways. He would cost the minimum, and we should always be looking to improve our depth. He played fine here two seasons ago and he has some starting experience. I don't remember what his ST capabilities are, but his familiarity with our system and experience on the field are big assets in a depth player.

We can always use depth. We need a playmaker though, or at least serviceable secondary with a FA splash linebacker acquisition. Something needs to change

I don't have much of a problem with McCain, as long as he comes for the Slot position and as a back up.
He made some plays when called upon, but he is a small guy.

McCain played well when he was here. Should have kept him over blake. But to be fair, Blake played better his first season here too but thats because he wasn't being called upon as much. He's not a starter.

I think you're dead wrong on Gay. Resigning him was a great move. He's been our best, most consistent corner since we brought him back, and we're only paying him #3 or #4 corner money.

Like many here, I take McCain over Blake any day. That's not to say that I want to see McCain on the field next fall, but signing him could provide insurance if there are injuries or other issues with the young guys and/or new draft picks. It would be good to have a guy like McCain in camp instead of Blake for that role.

I would take Steely McBeam over Blake. I didn't want to see McCain leave and them sign Blake. So maybe one year later I will get my wish...

I actually read today that we were working him out. I'm dying for us to resign him. I was a huge fan of his and didn't like the fact that he was let go to start with.

I think most would take our cheerleaders over Blake. ;)

I think we need a poll going to show who would keep Blake over McCain, a cheerleader, Steely McBeam, Cam Thomas, the workout bench with duct tape on it.

I don't like signing scrub CBs like Blake and McCain because when there are injuries or a starter struggles, Blake and McCain end up starting which they aren't qualified to do.

i will take it as long as it is a 1 for 3 scrub swap to leave space for some real players.

I agree that McCain is a lesser evil than Blake... but... they'd probably keep them both at this point.

Hipe Mitchell is fully healthy for week 1 or it could be...

    FS Will Allen
    SS Shamarko
    CB Blake

    :noose:

It would be a sad state of affairs if that was the case. Systematic failure all around unless it was an injury induced lineup.

    I'd take McCain back.

However, we also need to urgently design a defense that requires ONLY slot corners, and nobody on the outside. It seems like the only way we'll actually improve our secondary.

mccain and cockrell on the outside and gay in the slot, with mitchell and golden at safety.

that would leave blake, golson and a draft pick as backups. will allen ( i can't even believe i said that) and grant as backups for the safety spot. would that be better? that seem pretty likely.

the only other possibility might be a safety in the draft instead of a corner since thay are looking at golson as a draft pick.

5 safeties, 5 corners. there was talk of them having to play the nickle more last year over the quarters defense the year before. 3 safeties on the field could help against the run. two of them at least converted corners ( golden and grant) allowing for better coverage too.

Damn I hope not . Mccain nor Cockrell can actually play legit talent on the outside . That would be a pitch and catch nightmare with those 2 on the outside.Mitchell a good hitting Safety , but poor in coverage .Golden maybe a little hope in him , but not a bunch ...

We really need 2 Starting outside CB'S and a real Safety who can actually play the position the right way....IMO I think Gay should move to SS and Golson should play FS and let Boykin play the slot...The rest of the garbage just send it on out before it starts to stink...

no money to go after 3 starters. i think cockrell will improve. he sowed some flashes last year and is young so should get better with experience. you can't expect a guy that young to come in and be a shut down player year 1. we have always had guys that had to grow into the position. to be honest if blake is healthy he could also improve. i do think the thumb and legiment damage had a lot to do with the bad tackling. it's also taken our safeties (except for troy) a couple of years to get up to speed in our defense. if they improve i'll be happy. mitchell did better year one to year two. golden has improved. i hope cockrell will too. hopefully we only need to add one safety and one corner moving forward.

even gay and cockrell as starters and golson taking over the slot duties, then having blake and mccain as depth wouldn't be the worst thing. golson would have to really show early though.

if i had my choice, i'd throw cockrell and grant out there as the corners and boykin in the slot with gay and mccain as depth, then draft 2 top safeties out of this draft. cash, bell, simmons, thompson in any combo.:smiley1::cool:
