Gilbert is a much better athlete than Grant, he's also bigger and faster there's your upside.

Gilbert does not want to tackle, you have to want to tackle in the NFL. If not your time in the NFL will be short. He is a return man as far as I am concerned. Will never help us on defense.

Agree to disagree. Rather have his skillset and allow him to make a play on the receiver and the pass completion instead of always relying on tackling the catch while playing off by 7-10 yards.

If he want's to play he'll tackle. Anytime you get a former top 10 pick for a 6th rounder......

there isn't enough difference in their size and speed to make much difference. we are talking about grant being put on the PS gilbert is on the 53 man roster. grant was just given up on as are most drafted DB's for the steelers. bad move.

Yeah because Deion Sanders was the best tackler in the league. There have been a number of straight up cover guys who sucked at tackling. If he can shut down the other teams passing attack I don't care if he only has 10 tackles all year.

I will also add that most Teams #1 WR'S are poor blockers so it's not like they are going to be able to run right at the CB on that side ..The #2 CB really needs to be the better tackler as most Teams #2 and #3 WR'S are the guys that do the heavy lifting in the run game...We don't have a #1 CB yet ..

His college stats aren't that impressive, in 4 years grant had 107 tackles with 3 picks and 1 sack, he needs to be developed on a PS, thats why he's is on a PS, drafting burns and davis made him expendable......

When you think of the fact that this team had Blake last year, who could do neither of the things you listed, it makes it appaer that Gilbert HAS to be an upgrade even if he does just serve in a backup capacity. If he has one great game all year I would love for it to come against the clowns. Just because... Lol!

And Grant is still on a PS...the Bills. Like those guys said. When they drafted Burns, got Cockrell and expect Golson back...Grant was expendable. Grabbing a Gilbert, who can be an immediate asset on the return team as well as the prospect of being coached up made Grant expendable.

Who knows if they were going to make moves to put him back on the PS eventually he was taken.

Heres three defensive backs who were draft busts during the cowher era: How quickly we forget that drafting DBs is a crap shoot:

    1999 2nd Round – S/DB Scott Shields, Weber State

2004 2nd Round – DB Ricardo Colclough, Tusculum

    2006 3rd Round – S Anthony Smith, Syracuse

According to this report he wasnt even a good kick returner:

    From Pittsburgh Sports News:
DB Ricardo Colclough spent four seasons with the Steelers, earning a Super Bowl ring along the way. He played in 36 games for Pittsburgh, mostly as a kick returner. On defense, the 5-foot, 11-inch cornerback was simply awful. The few times he was actually called on by defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, Colclough failed miserably. The final straw for Colclough in Pittsburgh occurred during an AFC North Division contest with the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 of the 2006 season. The Steelers were leading 17-14 with just under eight minutes to play in the 4th quarter. The defense had stopped QB Carson Palmer and the Bengals offense cold and it looked like the Steelers had shifted the momentum in their favor.

Colclough had been horrible returning punts since inheriting the job, and most fans wondered why head coach Bill Cowher still felt the need to utilize him in that capacity. As Colclough was preparing to field the punt, he raised his hands above his head and proceeded to muff the catch. He then had a chance to recover his own fumble, but was unable to get his hands around the ball. Cincinnati recovered the fumble on the nine-yard line and one play later Palmer hit WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the end zone for a touchdown. The Bengals never trailed again, and the loss haunted the Steelers throughout the season. Colclough was placed on IR one week later due to a neck injury suffered during the bye week. He would appear in three more games for the Steelers in 2007 before being released.

grant being put on our PS would have at least given us a player to fall back on if gilbert remained cleveland gilbert. allowing the bills a 4th round draft pick of ours was a gift to them. even if they took him off our PS they would have had to put him on the active roster, this way they got a 4th rounder for nothing.

I don't see any of that happening. We all agree plenty of talent. Make or break year for Carnell Lake as DB coach imo.

    Moot point.

Grant wasn't making the 53 and by all appearances of the PS players, not the PS. I think the Steelers saw what they needed to see and decided to move on with what they have. They do have 2 higher draft picks on the team that they expect to play (at some point) this year and solid corners in Gay and Cockrell.

We're arguing potential from a guy that was drafted after the one they just traded a 6th for.

Interesting. Maybe @PWP@PWP is right that something is going on behind the scenes at RB? Still seems odd to effectively carry 7, including the PS.
