Id be shocked if they don't sign him to an extension before he turns 34. It's the guaranteed money that matters, not the years, might as well sign him for 6 which should cover the rest of his career. If you only do a 3-4, you could be looking at another contract.

Is it just me or is Kapernick incredibly over rated?? I know Harbaugh is supposed to be great at recognizing talent but I watched a bunch of his games and it seems the Rams know what he is. They contain the outside and keep him from running and when that is done he struggles, the only thing I see is an exceptionally mobile QB with average accuracy. I guess that is why I'm not a talent evaluator but to get a contract like that seems strange, kind of like the Jets giving Sanchez and extension based on the defense getting them to two AFC championships.

Nope, I agree, overrated. I think with the exception of Luck, all the newbies are.

I think it just shows what walking into a situation of a team that has a good defense already and a decent offense as compared to qb's that are drafted as saviors on teams like the lions and rams and expect the newbies to take them to the promised land. it really shows it takes a team to be good. heck look at us at 8-8 the last two years. ben can't do it alone. kap and Wilson really benefit from a good team around them. flacco too. luck though, I agree is the real deal. he's also like ben in the pocket, when pass rushers don't have an idea of how big and strong guys like that are when trying to sack them. it puts them a tick or two higher than a normal qb. both make tons of plays after first contact.

Here is Kaps team friendly deal:

On Wednesday's edition of the Around The League Podcast, we pointed out that the initial reports of guaranteed money in new NFL contracts are often misleading.

As expected, there are caveats in the "guaranteed" portion of Colin Kaepernick's new six-year extensionwith the San Francisco 49ers.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport has acquired, via someone who has seen it, the specifics of Kaepernick's contract.
As a general rule, the most useful comparison tool for NFL deals is the three-year window. Kaepernick's three-year total of $44.17 million is sixth among quarterbacks, behind Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Tony Romo and Jay Cutler.
Whereas original reports had Kaepernick collecting $61 million in guarantees, the truth is his $12.3 million signing bonus, $100,000 workout bonus and $645,000 base salary for 2014 are the only fullyguaranteed portions of the contract.
Kaepernick has a $2 million roster bonus in each year of the contract. His base salaries after 2014 become fully guaranteed on April 1 (otherwise only guaranteed for injury). In which case, Kaepernick will miss out on free-spending early weeks of free agency if the 49ers end up releasing him at some point.

From 2015 to 2020, there is a de-escalation clause that could lose Kaepernick a total of $12 million if he doesn't play 80 percent or more snaps in a season and make the Super Bowlor the All Pro squad.
The bottom line is a contract that originally appeared to be one of the richest in NFL history is, in fact, a team-friendly deal.
It's an important point with nucleus players such as Michael Crabtree,Vernon Davis, Aldon Smith, Michael Iupati and Alex Boone all angling for new contracts in the next calendar year.
The 49ers can move on without major repercussions if Kaepernick's career takes a surprising turn for the worse.
The latest "Around The League Podcast" breaks down Colin Kaepernick's new contract and debateswhich players are poised for a breakout.

So guessing that Ben receives a Drew Brees
type of contract, this will put him over the
200 million dollar mark for career earnings
from the Steelers. The cost of doing business.

Sounds PRETTY expensive to me, now
if he can add 2 more SB wins, this sounds about right.

Griffin had a pretty miserable year last year, but that dude can sling the ball. He's not just a runner, he can stand in the pocket and throw strikes. He showed that in his rookie year. I think he'll have a very good year. I also think Russell Wilson is a good overall QB who will get better and better with time.

We'll see if having a head coach he doesn't butt heads with will help any. I just fear with his style of play, he will spend a lot of time on the bench.

True. We could go into the season with our other franchise QB and not miss a beat. ;-)

Franchise QBs always have leverage. He may or may not choose to exert it.
