I haven't really looked but I have heard that we are gonna extend him so would it not free up more money to do it now? this is for you cap gurus. is it better to wait? I haven't heard anything about it. I know they are busy but I wouldn't think that it would be to hard to work out a deal with him

I remembering Colbert saying there is no guarantee they will extend him this year. But it is an option.

It doesn't seem like they will extend him this year, it will probably happen next year.

I think Ben would probably want to go this route. Given the big jumps in cap this year and the possibility of it happening again next, he'd be wise to wait and see just how high it is going to go.

Don't forget Mac that there is a huge difference between 32 and 35 I mean like John Holmes size difference here. Heck almost dying twice from injuries is nothing, rub some dirt in it and get back out there but having a bum knee now that is some serious stuff heck players are lucky they aren't euthanized when they have acl/mcl tears.

That's true, here is the best option for the Steelers this year from bleacher report: They could restructure quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s contract in order to save a significant amount of salary for 2014. This would convert his 2014 salary into a signing bonus. This would reduce his cap hit from $18.95 million to $13.32 million, a savings of $6.63 million. The team could then look to offer Big Ben a long extension after the 2014 season.

Maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way, but I'd want to extend him this year if we could. With the cap going up next year, I say he will only get more expensive. Signing him this year elminates the other QBs that come up next year and competing for who wants to be the highest paid

Strategically, from a cap management standpoint, that's not in their best interest.

is the reason because of being able to make some moves next year? he and timmons are the only two not changed amongst the top salaries. we have redone everyone else and worilds may not budge this year. can we redo these other salaries in back to back years? should we?
