I know, another Arians post, but this one is different.
Although I did not express it as much as some I felt very strongly Arians needed to go. I also thought he would fail miserably with the Colts, but he has not. Their offense for whatever reason is playing well. So I started wondering why. Is Luck a better qb than Ben? Don't think so. Is their talent better than the Steelers? No again.
To make this short I believe Arians was an enabler to Ben. Ben had been successful with his playground style of play and Arians I believe encouraged it. Ben liked to throw the deep ball and Arians put it into the offense...A LOT.
I believe Arians allowed Ben to get by on his athleticism and never challenged him to become a better or more complete qb. Now that Haley is here I believe that is exactly what Ben is being asked to do, and he is reaping the rewards of it...and so is the team.
    Thoughts?

Ben has all the tools that all the other top qb's have. the biggest knock on Ben was his work ethic in the film room.

Ben can do things on the field that no other qb can do. he can move in the pocket and shake 250 plus defenders off of him like they arent even there. he can make all the throws and he has a strong arm.

Ben loved the playground approach and with that there seemed like there was little need for him to be in the film room. he seemed to figure if things break down he would just start running around and make big plays. which for the most part he did with great consistancy.

now in Haleys offense Ben is being asked to be a qb that can make quick reads and hit the open reciever on time. he still moves around in the pocket, but we are not seeing the big plays come from that. he is moving and using his check downs much more frequently when he breaks from the pocket.

im also noticing him looking at pictures on the sidelines more this year. in one game i noticed he was talking to one of his wr's and he kind of gestured come over here and the next shot was them looking at pictures on the sideline together. he has become much more of a thinking qb. he is still reacting, but he seems to be thinking ahead and i believe that is why he is putting up the numbers we are seeing from him this year.

Arians was a fine ocordinator and we are seeing that with Luck, but Luck is a rookie and doesnt have much pull yet. Ben was a 2 time super bowl champ and pretty much could call his shots. i think the Rooneys got in Bens head this offseason and Haleys offense makes sense to him. he getting sacked less and hes putting up MVP type numbers. i see him having a better second half than his first half. the offense is just starting to click. they are starting to put up 7 instead of settling for 3.

Why did you think BA would fail miserably? He didn't fail miserably here, he just employed a system that didn't allow us or Ben to maximize their full potential. It's obvious that the same system is on display over at the Colts now. 433yds passing and barely hold onto a win. BA is a one dimensional thinker, passing attack, that's it, no feel for the game, no strategy, just try and kill the other team by passing the ball. It's not the most efficient system but he does win games, we won a bunch here with him. But now we are getting to see just how much better Ben and our offense can be. Yesterday was the first time in I don't know how long that I felt confident we would run the clock out. How much do you want to bet that under BA we would have gone 3 and out when we got the ball back with about 3 minutes to play? Things are definitely better and we haven't even reached our peak yet.

I think we should wait a season or two before we make a final decision whether Haley has helped Roethlisberger improve, but let's discuss it weekly until then. How do you think Roethlisberger would be compared to Rodgers, Manning, and Brady if Arians wasn't the OC for the last five years? How many Super Bowls do you think that Roethlisberger would have won for the Steelers without Arians? Do you think he would have been riding his motorcycle without a helmet or gotten into trouble with that young girl if Haley was OC?

I think Arians wins despite his play calling at times just due to the talent that is playing with him. For Pete's sake, they threw the ball almost 50 times yesterday. To put that in perspective, Ben yesterday through 30 times. Now we ran the ball about 10 times more than they did, but also ran for over 100 yards. They had more total yards 516-349. Even with all of that, they still only scored 23 points. This again was one of the points that we used to talk about....total yards doesn't get you in the scoring column.

He probably has a better Oline there than we had when he was here, but other than that, I don't think there are many differences.

Now, I know that they are having a good year, but let's not forget a couple of things:

    1. They play in one of the WORST divisions in football. One of their 3 losses came at home to the 1-7 Jags.

    2. They have only played 3 road games so far on the year. Of those road games, they are 1-2 with the W being in OT to Tenn.

    3. They have not played their hardest opponents yet. Look at the rest of their schedule:

@ Jacksonville who they already lost at Home to.
    @ New England
    Buffalo
    @ Detroit
    Tenn
    @ Houston
    @ Kansas City
    Houston

I think you could look at that schedule and VERY easily see 8-8. Maybe they get a win they aren't supposed to somewhere, but other than KC, I don't see any game they should win on the road, which would mean 9-7 AT BEST with Houston also coming to their place. I think anywhere from 7-9 to 9-7 is where they finish.
