It looks like Cam is out for the year, but this could be a blessing in disguise. A great blessing that could save the season and improve the team.

I've been researching all 32 NFL teams practice squads, and looking at whatever i can find on ones i like to their size, and college competition. There are some really good players sitting on practice suads, and we can grab them if we put them on the 53 man roster.

With Cam out, this is a perfect time to switch over to a 4-3 defense.

You take a team that has a highly ranked defensive line, it goes to figure that they are going to have talent on their practice squad, usually it is only a slight dropoff in talent between starting and the practice squad.

I like the Texans Brandan Dunn, Rams Morgan Fox, Jags Richard Ash, KC David King, Patriots Geneo Grissom, Oakland Brandan Jackson, and Falcons Capi.

I also checked out the other 32 teams DB's on the PS. And found some real intriguing prospects.

The Steelers don't have those 3 dominant DL's for their front, nor do they have 2 good edge rushing LB's. They seem like they need to get 4 guys lined up to get after the passer. You have to go with 3 LB's instead of 4, I'd use Chickillo, Shazier, and Moats or Timmons.

There are DL's that are sitting on teams PS, and they could be starting for us. A 4-3 is going to get more pressure on the QB and help the DB's.
And I found at least 3 DB's on PS's around the league. Cardinals CB Harlan Miller, Vikes CB Tre Roberson, Broncos CB Taurean Nixon look great.

The NFL practice squads look like gold mines right now. And if ever a team needed to go to a 4-3, this is the team and the time.

It's too late in the season to get that many players acclimated to the Steelers system. It will take a whole offseason to properly convert to a 4-3. Practice squad pickups are OK to replace injured players... but to revamp an entire front 7 after 9 games is pretty much impossible.

Sadly, I don't think that's the case here.

There's another thread about a practice squad journeyman coming in for a workout, so this seems plausible.

Not sure why everyone is chiding the OP?

They probably won't get a PS squads guy. At this point they need a veteran who can step in quickly.

I feel we might need to change some things on D, this just isn't working anymore. Shazier might be the best athlete on our team we need to do whatever we can to let him thrive.

Having to cherry pick players from other teams' practice squads is a huge indictment of our scouting department and talent evaluators. Geesh - do we suck that bad? Perhaps time for Colbert to be put out to pasture?

Hey, Cam Thomas knows the system. Let's trade for him.

I'm a fan of the 4-3 over 3-4 but there is no way it can be done, mid-season, with our roster, by adding another teams PS player......

Cam is out, our best hope now is to call up one of our PS players for depth and play on. Mathews and Walton and Hargrave must play better gap technique and hold it better than they have. Mental mistakes are killers. Our LB must also play smarter defense.

Losing Cam is bad and switching an entire defensive scheme mid season is NOT the answer.
