With all the gloom and doom around here, how many of you thought Troy was a bust in 03?

There is a lot less gloom and doom here than most Steeler boards. I think there is a nice balance here, not overly gloom and doom at all.

I don't tend to use the term 'bust' - especially not for guys in their first year - but I do remember him being out of position, over-committing and causing concern on the old MB. I always thought he'd do well - the spark he showed on the field was utterly electric next to Flowers and the rest of the backfield.

I think the spark he showed was convincing enough that he would mature into a heck of a player, but that first year there were still some rookie errors.

I've been here a while. It's relatively less gloomy. Well, accept for after a loss. Oh, and when we play out west. :lolol:

I never thought Troy was a bust.

I hated the pick, let alone trading up to get him. A midget safety with concussion problems? Yeah, that'll work out well!

Come on now, you remember all the 'Fire everybody" threads. :roflmao:

I guess gloom and doom was strong wording. I wouldnt know what other boards are like, I will say I like this one better than the ones the Steelers actually had. I dont think I have ignored anyone on this one. Do we have an ignore button?

The only reason I asked that question is bc of the interview with Dan Rooney. He said they traded up to get him and acted like people were concerned after the 2003 season. I got of watching football for a few years and actually missed his rookie season. I started watching him in 04.

I didn't think he was a bust and not being a draft guy I didn't think the moving up was such a bad thing. I do think he played tighter in those first few games. I remember when he started to blossom as a player they made a point of saying it was when he started to let his hair out. I think that is when he really started to connect with fans too. Remember when he used to practice bare foot?

Big motor players are rarely busts, they out work
the next man. If they have the physical talent,
and HEART. They will always succeed in some fashion. JJ WATT anyone?

The motor was never in doubt. It was more like one play - no idea who it was against - I remember him charging in for a blitz at full pelt, and actually missed the running back who had the ball, but just about glanced him enough to put him off balance so someone else could make the tackle. Had he missed completely, the RB would have had a good gain. He was a high risk player, and I think it took a season or so for folks to become completely comfortable with that.

I take your point, but think there's a bit more to both Watt and Troy's success than just their motor.

---This, and your other post also are realistic appraisals of TP's start. I really never saw anyone that did not think his upside might be limitless.

There are a lot of threads everywhere now about safety play. I was going to post that I could not recall the last time a Steeler safety got over in time to defend a deep pass after the CB was beat. Then I remembered a play in TP's rookie year. He not only got over in time to bat down the pass, but he overran the play. It was funny. He had to reach back and knock the pass down with his other arm but did not get the interception. Yeah, another one like him is welcome.

I am coming here from "another steeler board" so I am pretty new here but the board I left there was a lot of doom and gloom and a lot of guys who thought they knew way more then everyone. So far from what I seen here it isn't like that, just my two cents.

let us not forget.. (like the NFL network seems to)...Tim Lewis was the defensive coordinator for Troy's rookie season... which may have contributed to his less than stellar start... Dick LeBeau didn't have any say or business in drafting him.. but once he got his hands on him in 2004 Troy could blossom...Troys 2nd season, his first with LeBeau was damn near as good statistically as the year he was chosen DPOY. more tackles and only 2 less INT's

Interesting you posted this, because I specifically remember in 03 while watching a game thinking "wow, and they traded UP for this guy..."

I don't follow college football much so when they traded up to get Troy I thought that they must see something special cause they rarely if ever do that. Let's just say I had trust in the FO.
