You want to keep one of Dobbs and Hodges and develop that one, fine. Thinking you'll develop 2 is arrogance.

Truth be told, the NFL barely develops anyone. Come next week, the entire coaching staff will be concerned about game planning and wining the next game. The backup QB will get 10% of the snaps, #3 pretends to be the teams starter. Come February, they're looking at FAs and draft. Players that develop, develop on their own, if they do fine, if they don't? Well, 150 Div I universities lose 20 or 30 seniors every yr.

I'll go out on a limb and say that the Steelers don't have 3 Johnny Unitas' in their three young guys. Pick the 2 you want and give them the attention, such that it is, that you'd give 3.

You have only so many practice squad spots, you have needs at other positions. Why waste a spot on QB#4, when QB#3 might throw 2 passes over then next 3 years.

Well, that was a poorly thought out response, but I suspect you did your best.

That might be true I don't know, but Hodges has a connection with the Rooney's. Dan Rooney's grandson went to Samford with Hodges and helped him through the whole draft process. When Hodges wasn't drafted the Rooney's personally invited him to rookie camp to try out with the Steelers. I read about this on 247sports.com who had an article about Hodges.

I listened to Ed Bouchette "the Steelers Insider" on 93.7 the Fan this morning and he said no matter how good that Hodges plays the Steelers are not letting Dobbs go.
He also said that Dionte Spencer won't make the team because he isn't a good enough receiver and the Steelers won't keep a spot for just a return specialist. Maybe he has inside information or maybe he doesn't , we'll just have to wait and see.

That sucks on both counts. I doubt Bouchette would state things so definitively if he didn't have some kind of inside information.

That's true and probably accurate, but if not, it wouldn't be the first time Ed was wrong.

I too think Dobbs will be staying and it's just a feeling but down the road we will rue the day. I still say the QB that will take over once Ben retires is not yet on the team.

Over at the SteelersDepot, Alex has made a strong case that the practice squad is literally for getting the starters ready for game day. That's why the types of players (RB, LB, OL, etc.) on the squad is the same year after year, regardless of the individual talent levels. Developing raw talent is secondary.

Obviously it won't be Dobbs, but I think that Rudolph can be a stop gap, middle of the road starter in the mold of Alex Smith or Andy Dalton. I know that isn't a ringing endorsement, but it beats being a total flop.

Dobbs stays on the 53, and Hodges to the practice squad (though having a QB on the PS is not common for the Steelers).

That's true, too. Hell, the guy has been covering the Steelers as a beat reporter for one outlet or another since the '80s.

You know, Cam Newton got injured last night. If the Steelers did want to move on from Dobbs and get something in return, Carolina seems like the perfect fit for Dobbs as a backup as his skill set would do better in an offense based on Cam Newton...

I'm hearing Glemm is giving Hodges a run for the 4th QB spot.

A lot of those media guys also said the Steelers wasn't going to cut Landry Jones last season.

This is tough. They have some level of confidence in Dobbs. Hard to think they get rid of him with Ben being so long in the tooth and Rudolph having never played a down.

Hodges will really have to prove something before they get rid of the only other qb on the roster with legit NFL snaps.

Yes Devlin has looked good but that's in the context of being an UDFA. We have to assume the qb position gets looked at through a microscope and the coaching staff is doing their homework.

If DH gets cut and goes on to be successful elsewhere that's a pretty strong case for universal FO dismissal. They don't want to get that wrong anymore than the rest of us.

I believe he will be Alex Smith with a tad better arm and tad less mobile

I think Mason can be on Goff/Wentz level and thats good enough to win.

Goff isn't a bad comp for Rudolph. Wentz seems to have a higher ceiling. His issue is he can't stay healthy.
