I'm a huge supporter of a switch. Thanks for the read.

i'm not so sure woodley can play the 4-3 outside LB position on a consistant basis, or foote as a 4-3 middle LB. big difference.

I think the writing is on the wall as soon as Butler takes over. You can just see it in their drafting and its certainly the defense Tomlin is familiar with.

Just remember to run a GREAT 4-3, you need 7-8 great linemen. The days of the Steel Curtain where 4 guys can dominate a game are gone, you need a rotation ala G-men.

I see: Keisel (RDE), McClendon/Ta'Amu (NT), Hood (3-Tech), Heyward (LDE) on the line, with Spence (WLB), Timmons (MLB) and Woodley (SLB).

Now you can get guys like Worilds, Carter & Robinson to sub in and rush the passer with guys like Foote, Johnson and Sly as backup LBs.

The BIG question, in a 4-3, can Woodley play Sam LB? Or will he have rush the passer as a DE? If he has to go to DE, than we need to find someone to play the SAM.

Either way, I truly believe the 4-3 is coming, sooner, rather than later. Harrison & Hampton are most likely not coming back next year, IMO.

Woodley is the only guy I see that would possible struggle with the transition. I don't see him as a LB, I see him as a DE in a 4-3. He did it before but not at the NFL level.

if he can get the knee healthy, i'd have no problem with JH at MLB in a 4-3. ike taylor at FS. keisel, heyward at DE. mclendon, hood at DT's.

Interesting article. I like the fact that Butler worked with a 4-3 previously. Hopefully next year we have a powerful defense between Butler and Tomlin putting their heads together.

I think that is why they drafted Spence,,,he is the new type of Middle LB.....The scheme is to use DL to keep him free and let him run to the ball, the speed at MLB also helps in pass defense as he can pick up the RB'S and Faster WR type TE'S.....With the zone read, spread 1 RB draw and the bubble screen type of stuff taking over the NFL Speed at LB will be the key not Power.....

I'm a 3-4 guy....and I still don't see it changing anytime soon......They will draft LB's early and often to replenish.

I'm with the 3-4. Hugh supporter...we don't have the defensive ends to run a 4-3. None of them are pass rushers.

I'm not advocating a switch, but I don't think Woodley would have any problem at all being a LDE. In fact, I think he's much better suited for that than he is SLB. If we DID switch, I see it like this:

    LDE (Woodley) -- DT (Hood) -- DT/NT (McLendon, Ta'amu backup) -- RDE (Keisel/Heyward)

    SLB (Harrison) -- MLB (Foote/Timmons) -- WLB (Timmons/Spence)

    --------
    Passing down sub-package:

    LDE (Woodley) -- DT (Hood/McLendon) -- DT (Heyward/Keisel) -- RDE (Harrison)

    LB (Timmons) -- LB (Spence)

To me the DL is fine and the problems are all at LB. Harrison I believe is more versitile and athletic than he gets credit for, and could play any LB position. However, we can't count on him for long, so we'd need to find someone. Worilds might also be more athletic than he gets credit for, but that is a pretty huge switch for a guy just now wrapping up his transition out of college.

Timmons could start at either MLB or WLB, and where he goes depends on who else we have. If Foote is still around, he'll probably stay in the middle and Timmons on the weak side, which is probably his most natural position. If Foote's not still around and if Spence can go, Timmons goes to the middle. If Spence isn't a go, we need to find a WLB. Carter's got some speed, but that's another huge transition for someone whose main shtick is edge rushing.

This team definitely isn't ready to go 4-3 as it is. A new LB of some sorts would have to be added. Of course, that's kind of a need anyway, even if we stick with 3-4. Foote will need replacing, and we don't know yet if Harrison's replacement is on the roster already or not. Secondary is another major concern.

I don't see where we would get the pass rush from in a 4-3
