But you didn't care who was making the calls earlier in the season, this defense relies on the pass rush and sacks are down along with Watt having a down year. And the ball hasn't bounced their way lately with the turnovers.

I don't care if he made the calls now or a year ago. If the defense has been a success over the course of the past 5 seasons having two separate DCs with Tomlin calling the plays, then yea nobody would be moaning. But the defense has underperformed for years.

If I was simply the ball not bouncing their way, the locker room wouldn't be in disseray.

I don't think the locker room is in disarray, yeah the players are frustrated over the 3 game losing streak.

Maybe being one dimensional isn't a good thing. We live and die with the pass rush and don't really do anything else well. All it takes is the other team to have a great Oline or scheme in such a way to slow down our pass rush and we're not very effective. The pass rush results in turnovers. Good teams and elite QB's get rid of the ball fast and they don't turn the ball over much. It's not about luck, it's about skill. Top teams don't turn the ball over much.

There are criticisms when the team is winning, just not as much. And it always ends with “as long as they keep winning”. Even when we were winning, I never liked the fact that our cb’s were playing off the receiver, sometimes 5 yards off. That i thought was a weakness other teams would exploit and sure enough, they did, especially starting in Philly.

Minnesota Defense looks great today. Really should have kept Flores in Pittsburgh.

That wasn't going to happen as long as Austin was still under contract.

His schemes remind me a lot of Lebeau's. Problem with Lebeau, was he had an aging defense post 09 SB and his D was carved up big time after that SB loss, until he retired in 14. But if you have SMART, athletic players, those exotic zone schemes are fun to watch and very effective (example today against GB)

while still being one of the better defenses. then he retired onto tennesee to only have the top defenses for the next two or three years. again MT had a hand in the defensive backs that were here for dick. lebeau was banging the table for guys that could play more man coverage. they kept giving him zone players and tried making them play man coverage. lebeau pitted his frustration about that for several years. MT liked that tampa 2 zone. he had to be smarter than everyone else. i don't think he liked that we had 3 former head coaches here at that time. haley, lebeau, munchak.

Some folks think coaching isn’t the key problem. This is how a player talks when the coaching staff has utterly failed the players by failing to adequately prepare.

And some folks will never ever think Tomlin is the problem. You can always count on Tomlin's defense team saying he is never wrong or accountable.

History doesn't support that. Incompetent Steelers coaches have the job security of a government employee...... You just can't get rid of them.

Curious about those three years at the Titans. They were 17th or worse in PPG for each of the three years. In total YPG, they were outside the top 10 in all three years.

Vrabel came to the Titans in 2018 and they became a top 10 unit, but Lebeau had already retired.

Don’t get me wrong, Lebeau was a great coach. There were a number of teams from that era that borrowed his schemes. As offenses evolved, defenses changed.

here is a little bit of how it went down. lebeau improved that defense greatly and had one of if not the top secondary in the league during his time there. huge transformation. he still had plenty to offer that MT didn't control but wanted to.

No doubt they improved. It’s not surprising as Lebeau is a good coach.

My point is - you said top defense, they were middle of the road.

Revisionist history. LeBeau's defense was never better than 16th in points allowed while in Tennessee. Meanwhile the Steelers have been top 10 the last few seasons.

OK as i was typing i may have left out the words (one of) the top defenses. in a few categories they were 12th which is not middle of the road. in pass attempts allowed they were the top. in sacks they were 12th. huge change from when he entered there. the point i was getting at was, he wasn't done when we forced his retirement from here. if MT had given him what he wanted and not tried to take over, it would not have been (carved up).

he took them from bottom feeders to a good defense. he could have done that here without the power play. all they did was give butler a position to be tomlins lap dog and run lebeau's defense.

he took tennesee's defense from 27th ranked to 13th.

it sure hasn't worked out well with what the steelers are doing after lebeau. that is the point in all of this. MT ain't as good as he thinks he is. forcing out a known commodity was not a smart move and still isn't as we have witnessed. y'all can ***** and moan about different rankings but he turned that defense around and shouldn't have been ousted the way they did it here. there was still plenty to build on but that wasn't what MT wanted. his ego has made the steelers what they are. no losing season limp into a playoff loss team.
