    Thoughts?

I would still like to see Timmons extended and another couple of guys brought in. That still leaves us 7 million once Woodley goes away.

    5 million for rookie class
    2 million for in-season moves.

Use his 4 million to really get us where we need to be.

Hopefully the off season still has one more thing in store... a long term contract for Worilds??

A long-term reasonable deal for Worilds would be a nice next act. That should shave at least 5-6 million off the cap for 2014. However, other than extending Heyward, or waiting to see who else gets cut, I'm not sure what more to do with that cap space. Pickings are getting slim out there at positions that we need other than guys who will take 1 year role player deals.

Yeah...I said extend, I meant restructure. That would free up another 4 million or so and with displacement, it could be a couple of guys, especially if they are vet min type contracts.

The cap space needed for the rookie pool is more like $3 Mil.

They are done with free agency because they don't have anymore salary cap space, there maybe a few contract restructures or extensions still to come Worilds I hope.

If they want to make more moves they can and will...we'll just have to wait and see.

steelerdepot.com implied that due to displacement, we could potentially bring in a guy at the vet minimum without any restructures or extensions.

Even more than that depending on who they wanted to bring in. Just for depth though...no one sexy.

  11. Timmons was in the mix to get his deal restructured in order to clear cap space.

Not a follower of the cap, but wouldn't restructuring Timmons just push more money to the back end of his contract? I don't like that, as that's part of the reason we are always in cap conundrum. I'd rather he get close to the end of his current contract and sign him to a new deal, rather than back-load his current. There isn't much out in the FA field that is worth messing around with our future finances for, anyway.

Just leave things be and pick up some scrubs in July and August.

I suspect Keisel will get signed in June, and then if there are any surprising cuts by other teams we might consider those as well.

Right. A full restructure of his contract should be a last resort. That $3.9 Mil just isn't needed enough now to warrant the consequence from a cap management standpoint. Taking his base down to the vet minimum of $855,000, leaves a remainder of $5.895 Mil. That gets rolled into a cash signing bonus, and prorated across the remaining years of his contract for cap accounting purposes.

So, his already formidable prorated bonus figures go up by $1.965 Mil. in '14, '15, and '16. His '15 and '16 cap numbers would go from apx. 12.6 Mil and 11.8 Mil, to apx. 14.5 Mil and 13.8 Mil respectively.

I think the best deal we made in this off season, was hiring Mike Munchak for our Oline coach...

Just like some have already said...they do still have cap space to potentially sign a few guys at min levels...and if that wasn't enough and theres someone else they want/etc...then they could work on extending or restructuring (as a last resort). Instead of saying the same thing as others have i just answered the topic of the post...if they want to they can and will. I personally wouldnt be shocked if we see a couple more moves leading up to the draft.

If we can get a long term deal in place with Worilds, it should free up at least 5 million for 2014. I'd certainly want to get that done before restructuring Timmons' contract.
