    O. J. Simpson has died. 76 yo.
I don’t know the details but I was told he might have been drafted by the Steelers. Perhaps I’m thinking of someone else from that era.

I've never heard of that but I imagine, if true, that the Steeler execs were balanced on the edge of a knife in anticipation. They would have gladly taken a stab at a rb that was built like a Ford Bronco and thought that he would fit like a glove in the offense.

    too soon?

I guess we did ok anyways. We drafted mean joe Greene.
Question: would you rather have drafted OJ or Joe Greene?

Simpson went #1 overall. The Steelers drafted a Defensive Tackle, but the name escapes me

There is no correct answer to that question. Each of us must ax himself. Or his wife.

Lucky for him, someone mistook his gloves for Kenny's.

Memory shaky but it was 1975 or 76 and I was stationed in Hawaii. Group of us rented an off base house. One guy was from Buffalo, diehard Bills fan. Bills at the Burgh and that person I won't name rushed for over 200 yards on us. They beat us that day. Roommate was over the top excited. Started talking the Super Bowl. That was one long week for me. Frigging Bill posters went up all over the house.

Another roommate was from Minnesota and we watched the Steelers first SB together. We were very respectful.

I never heard that, but I did hear He was supposed to play as the Terminator instead of Arnold S, but turned the role down.

It’s pretty much bs since 3 or 4 teams drafted before us that year and Simpson went at 1, but it’s an interesting fairytale I guess

I think the coach prior to Noll was keen on it. And there were rumours the Steelers were playing to lose so they would pick first and get him.

It turned out they weren't playing to lose, they were just really, really bad. Not as bad as Buffalo though, thankfully. Apparently Noll wouldn't have picked OJ though, he was dead set on building from defense.

The Steelers drafted 4th in the ‘69 draft, so it’s not like they had the option to draft Simpson. But I’ll bet anything that if the Steelers had that 1st pick, they’d have taken him, as would any other team that yr. He was like Mario Lemieux or Sid Crosby, the no brainer choice on draft day.

I didn't start following football till a few years later, but I've read that the Steelers were in line for the first overall pick in 1969. All they had to do was lose the last game of the '68 season and they'd get the first pick. They ended up winning that game, and Steeler game were upset about that. The saying then was "the Steelers can't even lose right".

You may be confusing the Steelers with Philly. The ‘68 Steelers lost their last 5 games, and finished 2-11-1. The Eagles won 2 of the last 3, and finished 2-12, a 1/2 game behind Buffalo. So Philly blew their chance not Pitt. I believe ‘68 was the year Eagles fans booed Santa Claus at halftime, probably in part due to irritation that their teams was winning meaningless games!
