Although Smith has played fairly well lately, he's shown me enough already to know it's the way the 49ers are using him and not because he's a really good QB by any means. Although I can't stand Harbaugh it's because of him and the style they play that gives the impression that Smith is actually better than he is. We're not talking about a rookie or a 2nd year player. Smith has been in the league for around 8 seasons and he's really only had a season and a half worth of good play IMO. And that's under an offensive system that doesn't allow him to take control of the game, like you'd want your starting QB to do. It reminds me of Bens first couple seasons where we didn't ask him to win games but instead only allowed him to throw enough to hopefully not lose games.

Now as a backup he'd be fine IMO but not for what it would cost us to have him as our backup.

Smith may not be special or "all that", but as it stands right now, he ain't no back-up either. He has tasted being a big time QB in the NFL and that's all he'll accept and consider. He knows his time is limited to achieve all he's ever dreamed. An athlete's talent as a franchise QB in the NFL is like a young ladies beauty. You only have so much time to make it work for you.

    The clock is ticking.

    No Sir.
Right now, he'll start somewhere, but soon fade into back-up oblivion.

ESPN reported that this very scenario might play out. They said that Eli was interested in a back up position but still wanted to play for a contender. Can you imagine seeing Eli in the Black and Gold? I wonder what his contract will look like?

My guess is that if a Manning ran onto the field tomorrow in B&G against Baltimore, what you would do is cheer like hell for them. Be his name Eli, Peyton or Archie.
