it looks like he has lost his job to Kaepernik (spelling). he would be a very good backup. unfortunately there are going to be a lot of teams that need starting qb's and i doubt he wants to come to Pittsburgh to stand on the sidelines.

finding a quality backup is not going to be easy. there are going to be a lot of teams looking for qbs this offseason. the Eagles, Cardinal, Bills, Chiefs to name a few.

maybe Hoyer will catch on and prove to be a good signing.

He would not...but there are teams that would offer more than a 7th....and he would definitely have to restructure to come here

    2013: $7.5 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due in March), 2014: $7.5 million 2015: FA

Who wants an 8 million dollar backup?

well right now i bet the Steelers would. it would be much better than watching the 2 backups they have right now stumble and bumble all over themselves.

For whatever reason the 49ers dont like Smith. They proved that when they went after peyton and the year smith had.

Who would pay $8mil for a back up? Dont know about the Rooneys but I know one Steeler fan who wouldve loved to had Alex Smith playing the last 2 weeks.

yes smith is better than the two fossils we have but is not anywhere near to worth 8 milion , and we can't invest 8 milion of our cap in a bckup , we need to find a young development prospect in the draft , and we can keep hoyer to compete

For those interested in Alex Smith: Would you pay him $8M/yr if you were guaranteed a playoff birth? How about an SB appearance?

yes but is not alex smith a qb that can guaranteed those things playing only 2/3 games a year , smith guarenteed a couple of better throws than lefty while is escaping a pressure , you can find that for lot of cheaper, give hoyer a full season and you have the same result had smith in san francisco

I really wanted to get Smith a few years ago when it looked like he was on the outs in SF. At this point there's no chance. He's an established quality starting QB who deserved the contract he got. There are teams that need starting QBs. He's not going to take an 80% pay cut to backup Ben. And I'm not convinced he's lost his starting job. I think SF may be just bolstering both guys to make both tempting trade bait. It's not like Alex was playing bad when Kaepernick took over. His numbers are great, even better than Kaepernick's, whose numbers everyone is so blown away by.

    Smith 2012: 70% completions, 13 TD, 5 INT, 104 rating.
    Smith 2011: 61% completions, 17 TD, 5 INT, 91 rating (+5 TD and 0 INT in playoffs)

He's a starter, either in SF or somewhere else. We might as well be talking about bringing in Eli Manning to back up Ben.

    this right here.

What I could see is the New York Jets making a play for him at which Mark Sanchez would become available. Now if you are going to look for a potential quality back up, he'd be your guy.

well there you go. smith for lefty and eli for batch. i'd take it. tomlin could then do what he did last sunday. when ben threw an int. , he could put in smith, when smith threw an int. eli. it takes them off the field too. win win.

Hack I thought ESPN Said Smith has a 7 mill roster bonus in March or is that owed 7 mill for the year 2013?

I would say off the top of my head the Chiefs at 1-10 would take Smith in a heartbeat, contract and all, and probably give him a bigger contract to boot....

And for me, the feeling would be completely mutual with the fact that they hired a complete and utter douchebag to lead the team I play for...

I did find it amusing that ESPN were reporting how Smith was bewildered that he had lost his starting position, when all he did was get injured.
Of course, Alex, what an unprecendented thing to happen in the NFL. Dan Pastorini and Phil Simms couldn't agree more.

I agree with some of this, they haven't treated Smith great, I can understand Peyton but now they go with a guy after only 1 game and they couldn't have sent a clearer message, "you're not the guy we believe that can take us there".

On the other hand, Harbaugh turned Smiths career around, he was nothing before the got their.

I disagree. Mark Sanchez would be an excellent back up. But this is all just hypothetical message board fantasyland so it really doesn't matter...

It's not all on Sanchez there, they failed miserably developing him.

but he still is what he is ..... I would rather have a rookie draft pick to develop than some guy stuck in bad habits
