I had found this by accident. Conversation with a co worker prompted me to look up Wikipedia.. Co worker claimed that Ed O'Neill was a FB for the Vikings in the 70's. Long story short, coworker got mixed up with the wrong "Ed" anyway here is the proof. It was a very short stint with the Steelers training camp 1969.

Not sure how many knew this but I certainly didn't.

Yeah he is also from western PA. I believe the story goes Noll told him early on he was too small and needed to think about doing something else.

There were several episodes of Married... With Children that featured NFL vets. One had Terry Bradshaw; another had Al's old high school football team versus a rival team composed of ringers (Kenny Stabler, Bubba Smith, Lawrence Taylor, etc.) Al's team was down like 77-0 or something before he realized who he was playing. They were all pretty funny shows.

I just met a classmate of Eds last week. I asked the classmate if he thought Ed, would have the success that he has had. He said it wouldn't have surprised him if Ed would have become a pro ball player. He never thought he would turn out to be an actor. He also said, Ed was best at playing basketball.
